In this standout chapter of the Romance novel Miss Josefina: Nobody's Princess, Dana E. introduces new challenges, powerful emotions, and major plot progress that captivate readers from beginning to end.
The doctor glanced over Josefina’s test results. Last time, there’d only been one baby.
Now? Two. The doctor looked genuinely shocked for a second, then broke into a big smile. “Congratulations!” she said, warm and sincere.
Josefina stared at her, wide-eyed. “Two? But last time I checked, there was only one!”
Oliver was frozen in place, speechless.
Two?
Two?
The word just kept bouncing around his head, echoing like he was standing in a giant, empty room.
Twins. He was going to have twins.
He couldn’t even imagine how his grandfather would react—would he be so happy he’d pass out on the spot? Oliver didn’t even want to think about it.
Josefina, on the other hand, was almost giddy. When she glanced over and saw Oliver looking like a statue, she couldn’t help but burst out laughing.
The doctor grinned, joining in. “Looks like your husband is too happy to even talk.”
The doctor didn’t know who Oliver really was, just saw a couple totally in love and caught up in the moment.
Josefina reached over and tugged at the hem of Oliver’s shirt, bringing him back to reality.
Their eyes met, and Oliver’s were shining, dangerously close to tears. Josefina was just about to comfort him when the doctor reminded her, “Let’s do the exam, okay?”
Oliver pressed his lips together, staring at the monitor like it was written in another language.
“Josie, let’s do the check-up,” he managed, his voice low and a little rough.
Josefina took a steadying breath and lay back, letting the doctor go ahead.
...
When it was over, Oliver was still clutching the test results, and Josefina led him down the hall to talk things through with the doctor.
“If they don’t, I’ll handle them when they get here,” Oliver joked, trying to lighten the mood.
Josefina slipped out of his arms and took his hand, her tone more serious. “Let’s not tell the family about the twins yet, okay? I don’t want everyone freaking out. You know how your grandpa and my parents get—one little thing and the whole family is in chaos. The fewer people who know for now, the better. What do you think?”
“I think you’re absolutely right. You always think of everything, Josie,” Oliver replied, looking at her with so much admiration.
Josefina’s smile was all sunshine—impossible to hide. “Deal.”
They got up and headed for the hospital entrance.
“Let’s get you something good to eat,” Oliver said. “You need to keep your strength up.”
If he could, he’d probably bring her every healthy food in the world right then and there—anything to make sure she and the babies were okay.
Hand in hand, they were almost out the door when someone called from behind them.
“Oliver?” A woman’s voice, bright with surprise and excitement.
