“Grandpa, Grandma, Mom, Dad—stop worrying about how you’re going to handle one baby. You should probably start figuring out how to split your time, because you’re about to have two to look after.”

Josefina’s words hung in the air. For a second, no one moved.

Did they hear her right?

Two babies?

Everyone glanced around, stunned, then almost all jumped to their feet at the same time.

Hattie rushed over, gently guiding Josefina to sit down. “Josie, are you saying you’re having twins?”

Garrett puffed up, grinning. “That’s my girl. Only she could go big, even with babies.”

Josefina could only offer an awkward smile.

Grandpa Robert and Emily couldn’t stop grinning.

Emily laughed, “Two babies! How lively things are going to be. Josie, are you sure your body can handle it, though?”

Grandpa Robert looked worried. “You’re so skinny, Josie. Carrying twins is no joke. Maybe you should take a break from school for a while. The babies are important, but you’re even more important.”

Emily shook her head. “Oh, you just don’t get it. Josie’s always been a doer. If you make her stay home and do nothing, she’ll go stir-crazy. I was the same way. When I was pregnant with Garrett, they made me rest all day, barely let me move. In the end, the delivery was so difficult I almost didn’t make it.”

Hattie joined in, “Mom, you’re always so thoughtful. I used to want Josie to take it easy too, but then I thought—why should it always be us women who have to put everything on hold? Josie’s used to working hard, chasing her dreams.”

Garrett rubbed his nose, feeling a little sheepish. He’d once hoped Hattie would take time off work too, but she’d refused. Everyone’s different, and he’d never push her into something she didn’t want.

Emily just smiled quietly.

Grandpa Brandon (if he’d heard): These old folks are plotting against me!

Meanwhile, Brandon had no clue any of this was happening. Right then, he was listening to a report from one of his men.

“Sir, the driver swears it was Oliver. We’ve tried everything to get him to change his story, but he’s sticking to it.”

After giving his report, the staffer stood to the side, barely daring to breathe.

Brandon didn’t respond. Bennett noticed and told the man to leave, so only the two of them remained in the room.

Bennett turned to Brandon. “Sir, do you believe him?”
