Back at home, Dominic caught a knowing glance from Sydney, and they settled down for a chat in the garden.
The night air was cool, and Sydney felt even colder inside.
"So, what did Grandpa say?" she asked.
"The painting's a fake, and Grandpa's livid," Dominic replied.
"What!" Sydney's voice was a mix of shock and dismay.
Dominic recounted the evening's events, and by the end, Sydney looked like she'd been hit by a freight train.
"How could this have happened? It has to be Oliver; he's set us up!" Sydney spat, anger seething in her words.
Dominic pondered, "Does Oliver even understand art? How could he spot the forgery at a glance?"
"From what we've gathered, Oliver isn't into art. Never seen him around any," Sydney reported loyally.
Dominic stood, his handsome features hardened under the glow of the streetlights.
"Why are you here, Dominic?" Shay stood, tension lining her posture.
Dominic shrugged off his coat to reveal a tight black tee, his arms muscular and defined.
Cracking open a cold cola from the fridge, he took a swig with a nonchalant air and a smirk playing on his lips. "Worried I'd off your sweetheart?"
"Don't talk nonsense!" Shay snapped, visibly irate.
"You think you can hide your crush on Oliver from mom and dad, and from me? You rushed back because Josefina's on the scene, didn't you?"
Shay, seething with a fierce look, plopped down on the couch, "Dominic, don't bite off more than you can chew."
"Me? Overreaching?" Dominic scoffed. "Shay, we're in this together. Don't talk to me about overreaching. If you were so capable, would you still be here arguing with me? Just remember not to mess up our plans."
Seeing the conversation was going nowhere, Shay stood and left in a huff.
