Joelle said, "You called in sick yesterday and again this morning. Mr. Shaw’s pretty ticked, thinks you're just trying to dodge his class. So, this afternoon, when he heard you'd be here, he switched periods with another teacher just to see you."

Josefina looked puzzled. "I really had something come up, it’s got nothing to do with him. Plus, I don’t even know Mr. Shaw. Why would I want to skip his class? My grandma's seriously ill, and it's touch and go. I just came from the hospital to school."

Haylee and Damita were stunned and immediately offered their sympathies.

Joelle, on the other hand, was still skeptical, trying to figure out if Josefina was telling the truth.

Before Joelle could say anything, Mr. Shaw walked in, lugging a big bag.

He set his books on the lectern and scanned the room, his eyes finally landing on Josefina.

"Josefina, I hear you've been absent for a day and a half. Do you think you've kept up with the material I've covered?"

Josefina replied, "I'm all caught up."

Mr. Shaw let out a doubtful chuckle. He had two boys push some desks together and started setting up the lab equipment.

"Since you're all caught up, why don't you show us how to extract the essence of a leaf?" Mr. Shaw's challenge caused a stir among the students.

"Does Mr. Shaw have it out for Josefina? How can anyone extract the essence of a leaf!"

"This experiment sounds insane. Is Mr. Shaw serious?"

"I heard even professors at the University of Melbourne are still figuring out how to do it, with no success yet."

"Mr. Shaw only taught us the steps, didn't even show us how!"
