And wealthy they are. We pull into a roundabout driveway that sits in front of what looks like a mansion. In the center of the roundabout sits a giant statue of a dolphin that is spewing water. The house is the size of the state of Rhode Island! Okay, I may be exaggerating a tiny bit, but it is way bigger than the ranch home I am used to. And not to mention that the outside landscaping is absolutely gorgeous. Flowers of every color decorate the ground and very green bushes line the house.
Just then John opens the limo door revealing the more vibrant colors as the tinted limo windows dulled it down. Stepping out, I shift my backpack on my shoulder before fully taking in the beauty that surrounds me. This is going to be my home? I am going to live in this mansion?
"Hey, Mar," Conner snaps me out of my thoughts. He is halfway up the steps of the house. "Come on in. Marcus is putting your luggage in your room." Marcus? Who is Marcus and why does he have my suitcase?
I follow Conner inside which is even more breathtaking than the outside. The front room is decorated beautifully, though, it does not look very homey. I am almost scared to even touch anything it all looks so expensive.
"Excuse me, Miss Parker." I turn to find a man dressed in a butler attire. His head balding, but the hair he has left is grey. "I am Marcus and I will be showing you to your room." He sends me a warm welcoming smile that seems genuine.
"Alrighty. Lead the way, Mister Marcus." I smile back at him. He seems really nice.
Following Marcus up the marble stairs, we walk down a very long hallway. Decorative plants and statues align the hall in various places, but I have yet to find one family portrait. Do they not take pictures? The last room on the left is the room we stop at.
"Your corridors, Miss Parker. I hope you find the room to your liking." He opens the door revealing a room that looks homier than the main entrance.
The walls are a grey-blue, and silver decorations and mirrors garnish the walls. White furniture with silver accents fill the room. The color scheme of this room seems to be all shades of blue, white, and silver. I quite like it, to be honest.
"Thank you, Marcus. This is wonderful." He turns to leave. "Oh, Marcus?" I call causing him to stop and look at me with that pleasant smile of his.
"Yes, Miss Parker?"
"Is Mr. Park-" I stop myself. "Um, my dad home?" I bite my lip nervously. I do not know what to think about calling my dad, dad. My mom never really talked about him, but when she did she referred to him as Mr. Parker.
"Yes, Miss Parker, but he is very busy at the moment. He says welcome and make yourself at home. He will see you at dinner time." He then leaves closing the door leaving me alone in this new mansion in a whole new state with pretty much a whole new family.
I totally feel out of place here.
Unzipping my bag, I pull out a picture of my mother and me. Her beautiful big brown eyes stare into the camera. My similar brown eyes are locked on her. Her smile brings back so many memories. I hug the picture and swipe away a stray tear.
"Dude, Conner, why is there a nerd in your house?" A voice of a teenage boy calls from the couch. Oh, crap. I totally forgot Conner was having friends over. And I am no nerd! Okay, maybe I am a tad bit.
"And why is she wearing polar bear pajamas?" A girl laughs at me.
"Uh, ignore her. She is a nobody." There is that pain stabbing feeling again. My brother, the one who was being sweet a few hours ago, is now treating me like a stupid jerk.
I look at him in disbelief with my mouth hanging open a bit.
"Close your mouth before you catch a fly, sweety," a girl next to the boy who spoke at first speaks before erupting into a fit of laughter. Closing my mouth, I stalk back to my room no longer in the mood for popcorn.
But before I could get back to my room, I heard a female voice say another thing about me. "What a loser, Con. Is she visiting from some town that nobody has heard of?" I shut my door before I let the tears flow.
My first day in California and it was the worst day of my life. Worse than the day my brother and father left. I felt like someone was repeatedly stabbing me in the heart.
