Chapter 20
Diana’s POV
Isaac released his grip on me so suddenly that I almost lost my balance.
The warmth of his hand disappeared‚ replaced by a cold distance that made my chest tighten. His eyes were still dark‚ still filled with an anger I had never seen before.
“Go back to your seat‚” he said coldly.
His tone shocked me more than his anger.
I opened my mouth‚ wanting to say something‚ wanting to explain myself‚ but the look on his face stopped me. He was extremely angry‚ and for the first time since I met him‚ I felt like anything I said would only make things worse.
So I turned silently and walked back to my desk.
The office suddenly felt too quiet.
A few seconds later‚ he spoke again‚ his voice now professional and controlled.
“Your duties as my medical secretary are simple‚” he said without looking at me. “You handle my schedule‚ organize patient files‚ manage calls‚ and prepare reports when needed. You do not follow me during ward rounds unless I specifically request it.”
I nodded quickly.
“And… I apologize for earlier‚” he added stiffly. “Making you follow me around was not part of your job.”
The apology sounded formal‚ too distant‚ like he was speaking to a stranger.
Something inside me sank.
The rest of the morning passed quietly. Isaac barely spoke to me except to give work instructions. He signed documents‚ reviewed files‚ and answered calls while I tried to learn everything as quickly as possible.
Then the door opened.
A woman walked in confidently‚ wearing a doctor’s coat just like Isaac’s. She was tall‚ elegant‚ and very beautiful. Her hair was neatly tied back‚ and her smile widened the moment she saw him.
“Isaac‚” she said warmly.
He looked up. “Sienna.”
Sienna…
She walked closer‚ leaning casually against his desk as though she had done it countless times before.
“I just finished reviewing the cardiology consult‚” she said. “You were right about the complication.”
Isaac’s lips curved faintly. “I usually am.”
She laughed softly.
Her gaze shifted briefly toward me — quick and assessing — before returning to him.
“And this is…?”
“My medical secretary‚” Isaac replied‚ already turning back to his paperwork.
“Oh‚” she said politely‚ offering me a brief smile. “Nice to meet you.”
Then she and Isaac continued discussing a patient case‚ speaking easily and finishing each other’s thoughts without hesitation.
I lowered my eyes to the documents in front of me‚ suddenly aware of how little I understood about his world.
A few minutes later‚ she straightened.
“Lunch?” she asked. “You’ve been hiding in this office all day.”
Isaac paused only briefly before standing. “I’ll be back‚” he said to me‚ his tone purely professional.
And then they were gone.
The office felt empty without him.
Throughout the afternoon‚ Sienna came in and out several times — sometimes to drop off reports‚ sometimes to ask quick questions. She seemed completely comfortable around him‚ laughing‚ teasing‚ and speaking in medical jokes that made Isaac smile in a way I hadn’t seen all day.
Every time she left‚ she would say something like‚ “I have surgery now‚” or “I need to check on my patient‚” before walking out again.
Pretending not to feel anything.
When Isaac stopped near Sienna’s destination‚ she leaned closer toward him with a smile and pecked his cheek.
“See you tomorrow‚” she said warmly before stepping out.
I watched her walk away confidently.
And I could feel a small tear leave my eyes.
Isaac drove again‚ eventually stopping in front of my parents’ house.
“We’re here‚” he said.
“Thank you‚” I replied softly.
I wanted to say something else‚ but he checked the time instead.
“I have an early surgery tomorrow‚” he said shortly. “Get some rest.”
Before I could respond‚ he drove off.
That night‚ I lay in bed staring at the ceiling‚ my thoughts restless. The images of the day replayed again and again in my mind‚ refusing to settle.
I turned onto my side‚ trying to sleep.
Then I heard a soft sound near my window.
My eyes opened instantly.
The curtain moved slightly.
Before I could react‚ the window slid open… and someone jumped inside.
A loud gasp escaped my lips.
