Cynthia's ability to play the victim was truly masterful. She actually tried to hit the girl who had saved my life.

I scrambled off the bed to stop her.

It only made Cynthia angrier.

"No wonder you didn't spend Valentine's Day with me yesterday. You've got someone else out there, haven't you, Wayne? How could you do this to me?"

The girl, holding her swollen cheek where Cynthia had slapped her, explained furiously, "I saved him... How could you just accuse me without knowing the truth... I..."

"She's my wife. I'm sorry," I said, deeply ashamed. The girl responded that she hadn't expected to save an ungrateful wretch.

After the girl ran out, Cynthia still didn't believe me. She said the girl and I must've made the story up together.

I didn't explain further. Not everyone was like Cynthia, who was so eager to fall into someone else's arms, searching for excitement and warmth outside of marriage.

"So, this is your lunch especially prepared by her, right? Well, you're not eating it!"

Cynthia snatched away my food, but I soon noticed the designer handbag sitting nearby.

She picked it up right away. That was an expensive one, something she'd wanted for a long time.

"At least you've got some decency, giving me a gift to make up for everything." Cynthia picked it up and couldn't stop admiring it, but quickly saw the bloodstains on the scarf.

"Does it hurt a lot?"

"No."

I had become a man of steel. Whatever physical pain I had could never compare to the ache in my heart.

Cynthia didn't know what to say. We sat in silence until her phone buzzed. She got up and said she would go buy me some food, all my favorite dishes.

"Okay."

I leaned back against the bed, reevaluating our marriage.
