The first thing Robert did when he came back to the States was join Mitchell Enterprises.
With Ava's connections, he smoothly landed a mid-level management position.
As for me, from the beginning, I was just another low-level employee.
Aside from a few high-ranking execs, no one knew I was married to the CEO.
That's when Ava and Robert started spending almost every moment together—commuting to work, and even showing up at our house unannounced.
To save face for Ava, my grandmother became the live-in housekeeper.
Grandma's cooking completely won Ava over.
Anytime Ava didn't have a business dinner, she'd come home to eat Grandma's meals.
Two days ago, Ava asked for truffle mac and cheese and bird's nest soup.
Grandma, being the devoted woman she was, braved the rain and went to the market for fresh ingredients.
On the way back, she tripped and hit her head.
She was fine at first and didn't want to bother Ava, but when I got the call while on a business trip, I immediately called Ava and asked her to take Grandma to the hospital.
Ava turned me down, saying she had an important meeting with Robert about a client and couldn't spare the time.
Helpless, I had to call an ambulance and get the neighbors to help take Grandma to the hospital.
Because of the delay, Grandma spent hours in the operating room but couldn't pull through.
Her last thought was wanting to see Ava, just to tell her the soup was ready.
Later, I found out Robert and Ava had checked into a hotel just down the block from our house, less than 100 feet away.
If Ava had just taken a minute, Grandma might still be alive...
I turned off the light and pulled the covers up, trying to hold back my tears.
Just as I was about to drift off, Ava walked in.
She'd showered and slipped into some sexy lingerie, as usual, and snuggled up next to me.
"Are you still mad at me?"
I curled up on the edge of the bed, saying nothing.
Ava reached over and pulled me in, softly kissing my back.
"Baby, I know I messed up. I shouldn't have lied to you."
"But Robert and I are just friends."
"That necklace doesn't mean anything, don't overthink it."
"You're not a kid anymore. Stop throwing a tantrum."
"Do you really think I'll just divorce you over this?"
"If Grandma were here, she'd be heartbroken."
Robert's eyes practically lit up.
He jumped out of the car to greet her.
"Ava, you look amazing today."
"These flowers can't even compare."
"I ordered them this morning. Happy Valentine's Day," he said, grinning.
Ava, clearly unable to resist, took the flowers.
She shot me a glance, murmured a quick "thank you," and sat in the passenger seat.
I smiled, but my eyes were cold.
Robert, still putting on a show, said, "Lucas, don't overthink this."
"Ava and I had a little tradition."
"We've exchanged flowers on Valentine's Day for years."
"I was abroad before, didn't get to do it."
"I'm just making up for it now."
Ava shot me another arrogant look and said, "Let's go."
"No need to explain anything to this rock."
