The tension in Isabella’s chest finally melted away. She leaned into Benjamin’s arms, wiping at the tears on her cheeks.
She hugged his waist tighter. “Thank God you’re here, Benjamin. I need you. Please, you have to help me.”
Benjamin wrapped her up, holding her close. “Of course, I will.”
As he spoke, Benjamin’s mind was already spinning. The only people left in the world who shared Isabella’s blood were Ashley Gomez and Dennis Lane. He could keep an eye on Ashley, make sure Emily Blair never got her hands on a strand of her hair or a drop of her blood. But Dennis… Only Andrew Lane could keep Dennis safe.
Benjamin explained all of this to Isabella.
Just hearing Andrew’s name made Isabella feel all kinds of things. She was grateful he’d helped her before, grateful he’d looked after Dennis, but she couldn’t forget how coldly he’d left her. The hurt still stung.
Still, she had no choice. She didn’t know what Emily might try to get close to Dennis. She would have to ask Andrew for help, whether she liked it or not.
“Do you really think Andrew will help me?” she asked, her voice small. “He said last time was the last time he’d ever do anything for me…”
She bit her lip, pouting, her feelings about Andrew a confusing mix of resentment and sadness.
Benjamin hugged her tighter, looking down at her, then reached up and gently pinched her cheek. “Didn’t you tell me your heart only belongs to me now? So why are you still upset about Andrew Lane?”
Isabella squeezed him, burying her face in his chest. “It’s just… I don’t know…”
“What is it?” Benjamin pressed.
She winced and tapped his hand. “You’re hurting me.”
Benjamin heard her and eased his grip, but he didn’t let go. His voice softened. “Isabella, please. Just tell me the truth. Is Dennis… my son?”
Isabella nodded, just barely. “He’s yours. Andrew always knew.”
Benjamin had wondered about this for years. If he counted back from Dennis’s birthday, it lined up almost exactly with when he and Isabella had broken up.
He’d always suspected, but watching the Lane family—especially Andrew—love Dennis so much, he’d convinced himself he was wrong, that it was just wishful thinking.
But it was true. Dennis was his son.
