Isabella’s voice suddenly faltered, her throat tight like someone had reached out and squeezed it. She couldn’t argue with anything Andrew said. It felt like he’d stripped her bare, seen every flaw, every secret, and she couldn’t hide from him at all.

Tears streamed down her cheeks and she could only whisper, “Andrew, so you’re really not going to help me?”

Her voice cracked with every word, but Andrew didn’t say a thing.

The sound of her crying hit Benjamin right where it hurt. It was like each tear landed straight on his heart. Unable to stand it, he gently took the phone from her trembling hands.

“It’s me,” Benjamin said quietly into the phone.

“Mr. Gomez?” Andrew’s voice came through.

Isabella’s eyes shimmered with tears as she gazed at Benjamin, looking so small and lost it made his chest ache.

Benjamin brushed a tear from her cheek and cut straight to the point. “Emily Blair might have figured out that Juliana Silva is really Isabella. She already has a sample of Isabella’s blood. Now she’ll probably try to get close to Dennis, maybe get his hair or blood for a paternity test, and then she’ll be able to prove Juliana Silva is Isabella. All we’re asking is that you keep Emily away from Dennis, at least until she can’t get what she needs. It’s not a big thing. Can you do it?”

Andrew was silent for a moment.

Benjamin’s brow drew together. Isabella’s heart was pounding so loudly she could hardly hear anything else.

Finally, Andrew spoke. “I told you before. I’m not going to help.”

Benjamin’s frown deepened.

Andrew added, “And I’m not with Dennis. I’m in the capital. He’s still in Riven. Even if I wanted to help, I couldn’t.”

Benjamin had already swallowed his pride to ask Andrew for a favor. Now, with Andrew turning him down, the frustration was almost too much. He was about to end the call, but Isabella quickly snatched the phone from his hand.

It was like thunder crashed in her head, so loud her vision spun. Her breath came in short, sharp gasps.

Her heart dropped like a stone. Her grip tightened on the phone, a hollow ache spreading in her chest. “Andrew, why?”

She tried to smile, but it came out bitter and shaky. “You’re lying, aren’t you? You told me before, you didn’t even like Emily Blair. Why would you say this to me?”

“I’m not lying,” Andrew said quietly.

It felt like a knife twisted through the softest part of her heart. Fresh tears spilled over. “Why? Why would you do this?”

Benjamin moved quickly, trying to wipe away her tears, his face creased with worry. He reached for the phone again, but Isabella pulled it just out of his reach.
