On her way to the office, Emily scrolled through her messages like she always did. Andrew Lane’s chat was lit up with five unread notifications. She read everything else first, then finally tapped his name.

Andrew: Are you really not coming to see me?

Andrew: What are you up to? Are you talking to Tristan Davis?

Andrew: It’s fine if you don’t want to come. Can we at least have a call?

He tried calling her on WeChat, but Emily had been asleep at the time. She always put her phone on silent when she slept, so she missed it completely.

Andrew: It’s late. Just go to bed. Good night.

Emily couldn’t help but let out a dry laugh. If he had enough energy to send all these messages, he clearly wasn’t in any real trouble. She didn’t bother replying—just closed her eyes and let herself rest for the rest of the ride.

When she got to work, Emily asked her assistant to try again at Andrew’s place, insisting the ring had to be returned no matter what. Unsurprisingly, her assistant came back empty-handed. The security guard had gone upstairs to talk to Andrew directly, but he wouldn’t take it.

Listening to her assistant’s voice on the phone, Emily wasn’t surprised at all.

Then her assistant hesitated. “Ms. Blair, the guard said Mr. Lane really didn’t look good. He was super pale and looked like he could barely stand. The guard asked if he needed the hospital, but Mr. Lane said he’d only go if you took him. He said he’s not going with anyone else.”

Her assistant sounded unsure if he should even be telling her this. “Um… Ms. Blair, so… what should I do?”

“Don’t worry about it. Just come back,” Emily said, her tone calm and steady.

“…Okay,” her assistant replied.

A few minutes later, Elizabeth Wilson strolled into Emily’s office and spotted her scowl right away. “What happened? Who managed to piss you off this early?”

Emily didn’t want to get into it. “What do you need?”

Elizabeth leaned back in her chair, hands behind her head. “Honestly, I’m not surprised. Andrew came to the city for ‘work,’ but let’s be real, you’re the main reason. He can’t help himself. Of course he went straight to you.”

Emily didn’t say a word. Elizabeth scooted closer, propping her chin on the edge of the desk. “You know, I checked into it. The Lane Group isn’t even planning to bid on this project. So if he’s not here for that, why was he at the Vanguard Automotive resort?”

Emily could already see where this was going. “Maybe he was there to see you,” she said, her voice flat.

Elizabeth burst out laughing. “Why are you dragging me into this?”

Emily closed the proposal and handed it over. Their team had already double-checked everything, so there was nothing major left to fix. “Just have the team make these changes. It’s basically ready.”

“Will do.” Elizabeth took the folder, but didn’t let it go. “Okay, work’s done. Now spill. What did Andrew do this time?”

Emily grabbed a file from her desk and swatted her with it. “Don’t you have anything better to do?”
