The driver held onto the car door and looked over at Emily Blair. “Ms. Blair, let me handle it. I’ll make sure he gets upstairs.”

Emily glanced through the windshield. Andrew Lane was slumped in the seat behind the driver, his head tilted back. She couldn’t see his face clearly through the glass, but she had a feeling he was watching her too.

She nodded, and the driver slid into the front seat. She had already sent him Andrew’s address, so he knew where to go.

Emily turned away, got into her own car, and drove back to Vertex International.

The office wasn’t far from the restaurant, and she made it there in about fifteen minutes. She went upstairs, took care of a few things, and then her phone rang. It was the driver.

“Ms. Blair, Mr. Lane just passed out. I can’t wake him up,” he said, his voice tight with worry.

Emily clicked her tongue, more annoyed than surprised. “Take him to the hospital. I’ll cover the costs.”

“I’m already on the way,” he answered quickly. Then he hesitated. “Ms. Blair, even though he’s unconscious, he keeps calling your name. Do you want to come over?”

Emily didn’t even have to think about it. “No. Just take care of him and call me when he’s settled.”

The driver glanced at Andrew in the rearview mirror and agreed.

Emily hung up.

Right then, Elizabeth Wilson breezed in, flopping into the chair across from her with a knowing smile. “I heard all about it. You had a meeting with Juliet Thomas, and Andrew Lane just happened to show up.”

Emily rolled her eyes. “Don’t you have work to do? Or are you just here for the gossip?”

Elizabeth grinned wider. “I knew something was up the second I saw your face. Come on, tell me. What happened? You walked in looking like you wanted to murder someone. What did Andrew do this time?”

Elizabeth leaned forward. “Remember what happened at the resort? The typhoon, your fever… Don’t tell me you forgot what Andrew did for you.”

Emily pressed her lips together. Of course she remembered.

Elizabeth kept going. “He did all that for you. It wouldn’t hurt to return the favor. You could at least go see how he’s doing.”

Emily’s brows knitted together. “I just don’t want to.”

Elizabeth smiled softly. “You’re stuck and you don’t even see it.”

Emily frowned. “What does that mean?”

Elizabeth traced lazy circles on the desk with her finger, her voice casual. “I know you want to let go of the past, to be done with the Lane family and Andrew once and for all. But have you ever thought about it? If you really didn’t care, you wouldn’t react like this. Someone who’s truly over it wouldn’t get so worked up. You’d just treat him like any other acquaintance, not with all this drama.”
