Her head was spinning and her whole body throbbed, but she was still conscious. She could see the servers lifting her up and carrying her out.

When they got to the hotel lobby, Emily Blair only saw a few drops of blood on the floor. Andrew Lane was nowhere to be found.

She bit down on the inside of her cheek, trying to keep herself calm, trying not to let any sound of pain slip out. Her voice came out rough. “Where’s Andrew Lane?”

The noise around her paused for a second, as if everyone had heard her.

Emily frowned, feeling a wave of frustration.

No matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t hide the strange, hazy edge in her voice, a side effect of whatever she’d been given.

The servers glanced at each other. They didn’t know who Andrew Lane was, but it wasn’t hard to guess he was the man who had been bleeding so badly.

One of them stepped up. “The ambulance already took him to the hospital.”

Emily let out a shaky breath. “Okay. You can put me down. I can walk.”

The servers ignored her.

Earlier, their manager had warned them that the guests on the top floor were all powerful. They’d been tiptoeing around all night, but then the police showed up, and so did Isabella Austin. Then a bunch of new servers appeared out of nowhere and told the original staff to leave. Right after that, the stabbing happened.

The whole thing had gone down in the hotel, so everyone was freaking out. Blame was already hanging in the air, and nobody wanted to be the one responsible.

When the ambulance finally arrived, the staff helped get Emily onto a stretcher. Someone told her quietly, “We’ve already called the police. They’ll definitely catch the people who pretended to be our staff.”

Emily nodded, barely processing anything as she was loaded into the ambulance and rushed to the hospital.

Emily frowned. “There’s probably someone behind all this.”

The officer seemed to recognize her from all the recent chaos, and Emily remembered he was handling Isabella Austin’s case too.

He looked at her with a kind of sympathy. “Do you have any proof?”

Emily shook her head. “I just overheard them talking. I hope you can look into it.”

His voice softened. “We’ll do our best.”

Emily hesitated, then asked, “How’s the Isabella Austin case going?”

The officer’s expression turned serious. “Based on what you told us, that Isabella Austin isn’t her parents’ biological daughter, we can’t confirm Juliana Silva’s identity through her parents. So we found Isabella’s son, Dennis Lane. We’re applying for permission to do a cross-city investigation and a DNA test between Dennis Lane and Juliana Silva. If the results prove they’re mother and son, that will confirm Juliana Silva is really Isabella Austin. If that happens, we’ll move forward with the arrest.”
