Andrew Lane sat in his hospital room, staring at the photos on his phone with a dark, stormy look in his eyes. His assistant had sent them just moments earlier.
The photos were clearly taken in secret, probably from some hidden corner on the street. They showed a car parked along the curb. The images were a little blurry, but you could still make out the people in the front seats. It was Emily Blair and Tristan Davis. They were close, hugging and kissing like nobody else in the world existed.
Andrew squeezed his eyes shut and clenched his phone so tightly his knuckles turned white. The veins stood out on the back of his hand, the only sign of just how pissed off he really was. Suddenly, the air in the room felt colder.
His assistant, standing a few steps away from the bed, lowered his eyes and tried to make himself as small as possible. He risked a quick look at Andrew, wondering if the phone was about to meet the wall. After a few seconds, Andrew’s grip shifted, and the assistant decided to step in.
“Mr. Lane, Mr. Lee has a few questions about the project,” he said, trying to sound casual.
He was really just reminding Andrew that the phone held important work stuff, and if he smashed it, the assistant would be the one picking up the pieces. Thankfully, Andrew must have realized that too, because he loosened his grip and set the phone down.
The assistant let out a tiny breath of relief and handed over a file for Andrew to review. Andrew flipped through the pages while the assistant waited, trying to blend into the background. All of a sudden, Andrew’s voice broke the silence.
“Keep someone watching them.”
Everyone knew who he meant. No need to spell it out.
The assistant felt a weird mix of frustration and resignation twist in his stomach. What was the point in keeping tabs? Wasn’t it just going to be more of the same—more photos of Emily and her boyfriend, more heartache for his boss? If he didn’t know how deep Andrew’s feelings for Emily ran, he might have thought his boss had some strange, secret obsession.
Still, a paycheck was a paycheck. The assistant kept his doubts to himself and nodded. “Yes, sir.”
After that, Andrew went through the file in detail, pointing out a few things that needed fixing. The assistant scribbled down notes and finally started to relax as the mood in the room shifted back to normal.
Then Andrew spoke again. “Tell me about Tristan Davis, Cynthia Rivera, and Hilaria Vargas.”
Tristan put away the last of his things and sank onto the sofa next to her, throwing an arm around her shoulders. “All done,” he said, acting like it was no big deal. “I’m not leaving again.”
Emily looked at him, considering. “So, you’re going back to the family business?”
He pulled her closer, crossing his legs. “Pretty much. My old job didn’t pay enough for someone as amazing as you. Plus, I was always out of town and couldn't be here for you. Who knows what kind of guys tried to hit on you while I was gone. So, yeah, I’m going to take over the family business. That way, I can actually be around for you.”
He shot her a smug little grin, clearly pleased with himself.
Emily couldn’t help but laugh. She reached over and pinched his cheek. “I never thought you weren’t good enough for me.”
Tristan’s grin only grew wider. “That’s what I like to hear.”
