What Tate Vargas said next took Emily completely off guard.

His face was full of regret and sadness, and there was a glimmer of tears in his eyes. “I didn’t come here to ask you to forgive her.”

Emily’s eyes narrowed a little. She just looked at him, waiting.

Tate wiped at his tears, his voice shaky. “I told you before, I was ready for anything. I wasn’t there for her… I couldn’t change what happened or the choices she made. That’s on me. I have no right to blame her. If anyone’s at fault, it’s me.”

He took a shaky breath. “Isabella did something wrong, so she has to face the consequences. Whatever the law decides, I’ll accept it. She doesn’t deserve the harshest punishment, but she’ll probably go to prison. All I can do is wait for her to get out… but I don’t think I have much time left. I might not even live to see the day she’s released. So I was hoping I could see her one last time before she goes in. Just to talk to her.”

Tate turned to Emily, his voice soft but desperate. “Emily, can you help me see her?”

Emily held his gaze, then nodded slowly. “She’s at the police station. I can bring you there, but you’ll only get to see her if she agrees to it.”

Tate nodded. “I understand. If she doesn’t want to see me, I won’t push it.”

There wasn’t a moment to lose. Emily pushed back her morning meeting and brought them to the station, with Tristan coming along as well.

When they arrived, a police officer who knew Emily came over. “Are you here about the Juliana Silva case?”

Emily looked at Tate. “Someone here wants to see Juliana Silva. Is that allowed?”

The officer glanced over everyone, then looked back at Emily. “And who is it?”

The officer helped him over to a bench in the lobby. “Please wait here. I’ll go check.”

Emily thanked her, and the officer waved before heading inside.
