Emily recognized the voice right away. It belonged to Hilaria Vargas, Tristan Davis’s secretary.

When she heard Hilaria call him Mr. Davis, a chill ran through her, cold and sharp. For a second, it felt like her blood just stopped moving. She didn’t even think about what she was doing next.

She pushed the door open and walked in. The first thing she saw was the bed. There was a man and a woman tangled together on top of it.

Her heart clenched so tight she could barely breathe.

Tristan was lying on his back, still wearing his white suit. His tie was missing, the jacket was unbuttoned, and so was his shirt, leaving his collarbones and neck exposed. His cheeks were flushed. His eyes were closed, eyebrows drawn together like he was in pain. His lips were parted, and she could see him breathing, slow and heavy.

His hand was out, resting on the shoulder of the woman on top of him.

There was no denying it. A woman was draped across Tristan.

She was turned away from Emily, half her body pressed against Tristan’s. She was wearing a red silk slip, one strap sliding off her shoulder, showing bare skin on her back and thigh. Her hand rested on Tristan’s chest, hair spilling over him like a dark curtain. The whole scene looked so intimate, it made Emily’s stomach twist.

Anyone could see what was about to happen next.

Emily’s ears rang. Everything inside her seemed to freeze. She felt herself sinking, her mind completely blank.

The woman noticed her right away, glancing over her shoulder with a smug little smile. “Ms. Blair, are you going to stand there and watch?”

It was Hilaria.

Emily couldn’t move. She stared as Hilaria spoke, her fingers tracing slow circles on Tristan’s chest. Her voice came out low and sweet. “Mr. Davis…”

Tristan’s voice broke in, quiet and confused. “Who are you?” His eyes stayed closed, like he didn’t even realize what was happening. He just let Hilaria touch him, the question slipping out slowly.

For a second, something like panic flashed across Tristan’s face.

He jumped up and walked straight toward her. “Emily, let me explain…”

Emily stepped back and held up her hand, telling him not to come any closer.

She shut her eyes, desperate to calm herself, but nothing worked. None of this made sense. She couldn’t process any of it. Tristan’s engagement to Cynthia, and now Tristan with Hilaria right in front of her eyes.

She couldn’t accept any of it.

She tried taking slow, deep breaths, but nothing helped. The pain inside her wouldn’t go away, and the scene she’d just witnessed was burned into her mind. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t stop feeling this way.
