Emily was busy replying to a work message when she looked up, a little spaced out. “My what?”

“Your phone,” Tristan said, “and my birthday present.”

Emily paused, choosing to answer the first part. “You want to look at my phone?”

He raised his eyebrow. “Am I not allowed?”

She thought for a second. “Hang on, I’m still answering some work stuff.”

Tristan leaned in, clearly not thrilled. “Who keeps needing you this late?”

He was peeking shamelessly at her screen, like he was just waiting to catch her out.

“Just a couple of messages. I’ll be done soon,” Emily replied, her fingers moving quickly.

Of course, her “couple of messages” turned into ten whole minutes of back-and-forth. Tristan watched the whole time, silent but obviously impatient, until she finally finished up.

He reached over and gently stroked the back of her hand. “You work so hard. My Ms. Blair, out here supporting the household.”

“Don’t get cheeky,” Emily said, shrugging her shoulder and bumping his head lightly.

She handed over her phone. It was unlocked. “Go ahead, take a look.”

Tristan accepted it, making a show of scrolling through her messages. “By the way, you still haven’t told me where you hid my birthday present.”

Emily watched him as he scrolled. He looked like he was doing some kind of investigation, checking each chat carefully. Most of her contacts were just people from work, so there really wasn’t anything interesting to see.

Tristan had to know that, but he kept up the act, his face all serious, like he actually thought he’d find something.

Ever since Albert found out she was with Tristan, he’d kept his distance. Now, he only ever messaged her about work. Since their companies had started working together, they hadn’t needed to meet or even text.

Tristan shook his head. “You never know. Better to be careful.”

His over-the-top seriousness made Emily want to laugh, but she just let him keep going.

Tristan opened her chat with Albert and scrolled up slowly. The recent messages were all business. It wasn’t until he got to the old ones, from before she and Tristan were together, that the conversation changed.

Back then, Albert’s messages hadn’t exactly been all that professional.

Tristan’s eyes narrowed, his expression turning dark. “Hmm…”

Emily reached over and ruffled the back of his head. “What’s with the grumbling? That’s all ancient history. Mr. Cox knows where the line is, and so do I.”
