Emily jolted awake, pulling the blanket tighter around herself as her eyes snapped open. Everything was still a little blurry, but she was definitely up. Before Tristan could reach for the covers, she tossed them off and glared at him, her eyes sharp with annoyance and a hint of suspicion.
Tristan pulled his hand back, laughing so hard his shoulders shook. “Relax, I was just kidding. I’m not going to do anything.”
Emily sat up, shot him a tired glare, then let her eyes flutter shut again. She slumped forward, clearly fighting to stay awake.
A moment later, she felt his fingers gently combing through her hair. He took his time, smoothing out the tangles as he spoke. “It’s already eight thirty. I put some fresh toiletries in the bathroom for you. Go wash up. Breakfast is here, and if you wait too long, it’s going to get cold.”
Emily hugged the blanket to her chest and buried her face in it, taking a long, steady breath.
Once she felt a little more awake, she glanced over and saw Tristan already dressed and ready to go. He was sitting on the edge of the bed in a perfectly tailored suit, every detail in place. Even his hair looked flawless. He looked so good it was almost distracting.
She slipped her feet into the slippers he had left for her and looked him up and down. “Where are you going, all dressed up like that?”
Tristan’s eyes flickered, then he smiled at her. “I have to meet with a really difficult client.”
Emily raised an eyebrow. As long as she’d known Tristan, she’d never heard him call anyone difficult. She headed for the bathroom, glancing back over her shoulder. “How difficult are we talking?”
He didn’t even hesitate. “Impossible. Terrible attitude, moody all the time…”
He barely paused before adding more. “No morals at all…”
He meant the kind of guy who hit on other people’s girlfriends without shame.
“And completely shameless…”
He meant someone who wouldn’t take no for an answer and just kept bothering his girlfriend, no matter how many times he got turned down.
Emily blinked, a little shocked by how harsh he sounded.
Tristan was usually the calmest guy around. In all the years she’d known him, she’d barely seen him lose his temper, let alone talk bad about anyone. He’d always seemed straightforward and open.
This was honestly the first time she’d ever heard him go off on someone like this.
Emily rolled her eyes. “…Do you want a ride or not?”
He kept watching her, his gaze warm. “If you really insist, I could be convinced.”
Just then, a sleek Rolls-Royce pulled up in front of her. The window slid down, and Tanner Miller’s face appeared.
He had one hand on the wheel, the other hanging casually out the window. He nodded at Tristan. “Hey man, your ride’s here.”
Emily recognized Tanner instantly. He was one of Tristan’s friends, the one who’d invited them to his birthday party at Riven.
Tanner recognized her too. His whole face lit up with a big, bright smile, showing off a perfect set of teeth. “Isabella! Long time no see.”
Emily froze for a second, caught off guard. No one had ever called her Isabella before.
She pulled herself together and answered quietly, “Yeah… long time no see.”
