Tristan turned to Andrew and flashed a smile. “Not too sweet is perfect. My girlfriend really isn’t into sugary stuff.”

Andrew’s eyes narrowed, just a little.

Tristan went on, “Actually, when I leave later, could you pack up two of those desserts for me? She might end up liking them after all.”

The waiter nodded and headed off.

Once they were alone, Tristan shot Andrew another easy smile. “You don’t mind, do you, Mr. Lane? Honestly, I can’t help it. She’s so picky with food, I’m always trying to find new things she’ll enjoy. It’s starting to feel like a full-time job.”

He couldn’t have made his point clearer if he tried. Every other sentence was “my girlfriend,” like he wanted to make absolutely sure Andrew knew exactly who he was talking about. It was obvious he was staking his claim.

Normally, Tristan wouldn’t stoop to cheap tactics just to get a rise out of someone. But this time, he just couldn’t help himself.

Andrew usually wouldn’t let something so childish get under his skin, but Tristan’s words hit home. There was this tight, heavy feeling in his chest, and his mood dropped.

Not wanting to let Tristan have the last word, Andrew took a slow sip of tea. “Why would I mind? If you’re taking care of her, that makes me happy.”

Tristan tapped his fingers calmly on the table. “She’s my girlfriend. Of course I’ll take care of her.”

Andrew gave a polite nod. “It’s kind of you to go out of your way for her. Thank you.”

Andrew’s eyes glinted with a smile. “Oh? She mentioned me to you?”

Tristan smiled right back. “Yeah, she did. She told me her time with your family was miserable. That’s why she left. She couldn’t wait to get away.”

The amusement faded from Andrew’s eyes.

Tristan’s smile only grew. “I have to admit, Mr. Lane, I’m really curious. What did the Lane family do to make my usually easygoing girlfriend so angry she’s still upset after all these years?”

Andrew pressed his fingers to his brow and spoke quietly. “The more you care, the harder it is to let go. I made some mistakes back then. Looks like I’ve been on her mind for a long time.”
