Steven sat there, his mind spinning. He knew he was right. “Just tell me… does this have something to do with Emily Blair?”
Tristan just lifted an eyebrow. “Why would you think that?”
Steven’s eyes locked on his, voice rough and tired. “Just answer me. Yes or no?”
Realizing there was no point in pretending anymore, Tristan gave in with a shrug. “Yeah. The bruises on my face? I got them fighting Andrew Lane.”
Steven’s face turned red, his voice rising. “You got into a fight with Andrew Lane… over Emily Blair?”
Tristan let out a short, sharp laugh. “Over her? Please. Andrew Lane isn’t even in my league.”
That was all the answer Steven needed. His jaw clenched as he tried to catch his breath, looking seconds away from passing out.
The butler jumped in with a worried look, quickly patting Steven’s back. “Tristan, could you please get the chairman’s medicine?”
Tristan put the gift box aside, grabbed the pill bottle from the table, and shook out two tablets into his palm. He passed Steven the pills, then held out a glass of water, gently helping him swallow and rubbing his chest until Steven finally settled down.
Steven bristled at Tristan’s casual tone. “So what? That history with the Lanes might have been five or six years ago, but I remember everything. Things ended badly. She got in the middle of Andrew Lane and Isabella Austin, and Kevin Lane kicked her out himself. She made the Lane family so angry that she couldn’t even stay in Riven. That’s why she left.”
“She’s a good person, but those scandals with the Lanes left a stain on her. If you get involved with her, it’ll affect you and the entire Davis family. You’re a good kid, Tristan. You shouldn’t let your feelings drag your name through the mud.”
“And now she’s caught up in that mess with Isabella Austin again. Isabella’s in prison, and Emily’s managed to offend not just the Lanes, but the Austins too. The Austins have been rooted in the capital for years. Even if we’re not close, if you’re with Emily, they’ll resent you. That’s not good for you.”
He blurted it all out, face reddening, eyes fixed on Tristan. “So tell me, am I wrong to try and keep you two apart?”
