Isabella Austin’s father caught her meaning, gave her shoulder a gentle pat, and said, “Come on, let’s go. We’ll figure something out somewhere else.”

As soon as Amelia Lane walked out of the police station, she headed straight for her hotel. She called Andrew Lane right away.

He didn’t pick up. She tried again and again, but he still didn’t answer.

Amelia realized she didn’t have his assistant’s number, so she had no choice but to wait alone in her hotel room.

The sun was almost gone by the time Andrew finally called her back. “What is it?”

His voice was calm, edged with the kind of tiredness that comes from a long day at work. There was no panic in it, no trace of worry about Isabella.

Amelia didn’t care. All she could think about was Isabella. “Andrew, do you even know why I came to the capital?” she blurted out, her nerves on edge.

Andrew was in the back seat of a car, loosening his tie, eyes half closed like he could fall asleep any minute.

“If you want to have fun, go have fun on your own. I don’t have time for this.”

“I’m not here to have fun!” Amelia snapped. “I came because of Isabella!”

Andrew didn’t even react. “So?”

Amelia blinked, thrown off by how cold he sounded. “So? Andrew, listen to me. I came here for Isabella. She’s been locked up, and we have to do something. We can’t just leave her in there. This is serious. We need to meet and talk about what to do next.”

“Andrew, what are you talking about? I’m talking about Isabella. Don’t you get it?”

“I get it,” he said. “So?”

Amelia’s face crumpled and her heart felt heavy in her chest. “Andrew, this is Isabella. Aren’t you going to do anything? Aren’t you going to stand up for her? She’s your wife. Are you really going to turn your back on her like everyone else? Are you just going to let her suffer?”

Andrew shut his eyes and his voice was low but steady. “Amelia Lane.”

She stopped, the sadness almost too much to bear. “Andrew, what’s wrong with you? This is Isabella. You’ve been married for five years. You have Dennis together. You used to love her so much. Did you forget all that? Everyone knew how much you cared about her. You can’t just let her stay in prison…”

Andrew’s voice was quiet and even, almost emotionless. “You need to remember, Isabella Austin and I are divorced. That means we have nothing to do with each other anymore.”
