Tristan typed out his message, careful and almost a little pitiful. That was so unlike him. Normally, getting Tristan Davis to admit he was wrong was basically impossible. This time, though, he was practically on his knees, apologizing after the fight with Andrew Lane.

But through his words, Emily could see how much she really meant to him.

She replied right away. “Don’t even bother apologizing. I know you. You’re still not actually sorry, are you?”

The second he saw her message, Tristan felt his cheeks heat up. He pressed his fist to his lips, trying to look serious, but the corners of his mouth betrayed him with a smile he couldn’t hold back.

She figured him out so fast. There went his pride, just like that.

Still, something warm and sweet bloomed in his chest. Emily knew him so well, he didn’t even know what to do with himself.

Even so, he tried to keep up the act. “I was impulsive this time. I’ll think before I act next time, promise.”

Emily shook her head and smiled at her phone. He was really worried she’d be mad.

She sent back, “It wasn’t your fault. You just care about me, right?”

Tristan bit his lip, feeling another wave of heat rise to his face. “Yeah… as long as you know. I didn’t mean for it to happen. Andrew was just being a jerk.”

With Emily nudging him like that, Tristan couldn’t keep pretending. He let his image slip and threw all the blame on Andrew. Honestly, he sounded just like someone who knew he was loved and didn’t have to pretend.

“Andrew said a bunch of nasty stuff. I couldn’t hold back. He was trying to get a reaction out of me.”

Emily replied, “So you’re finally being honest?”

Tristan felt his face go warm again. “You said it wasn’t my fault.”

Tristan felt like his heart could burst. “Okay, I’m doing it now.”

“Good.”

He set his phone down, grabbed all the ointments from the coffee table, and carefully dabbed them onto the bruises on his face and the scrapes on his body. He moved quickly, then took the hair dryer to his hair, making sure every strand was in place. He checked himself in the mirror, adjusting until his brow and sharp eyes looked just right.

Once he was satisfied, Tristan sat back on the sofa, phone in hand, waiting for Emily’s call. After a couple of minutes, her video call popped up on his screen.

He immediately picked up, making sure the angle was perfect, then tapped to answer.

On the other end, Emily was sitting in her living room. Her makeup was still flawless, a soft smile in her eyes and on her lips. Even just sitting quietly on the sofa, she was gorgeous. Her features were delicate and striking, her whole vibe calm and effortlessly elegant.
