Tristan wasted no time closing the gap between them and wrapped his arms around her, refusing to let go. "I get it, I messed up. I promise, I won't do anything to piss you off again. Please, don't be mad."

Emily let him hug her, her tone calm. "Did you put any medicine on it?"

Tristan's heart felt lighter just hearing her ask. "Yeah, I did. It's fine, don't worry about me."

"Just make sure you stay on top of it," Emily said, gently nudging him away so she could see his face. "Did the doctor say how long it'll take to heal?"

Tristan rested his head against her cheek, his voice softer. "Probably a week, maybe a little more."

Emily glanced at him. "So, when you showed up to work looking like this, did anyone say anything?"

Tristan gave a low laugh. "I'm Mr. Davis. Who would dare? The only people who ever call me out are my grandpa and you."

Emily raised an eyebrow. "What did your grandfather say?"

He mumbled, almost embarrassed. "What do you think? Said I was young and too impulsive."

"That's all?" Emily didn't sound convinced.

Tristan felt a twinge of guilt but kept up his act. "Yeah, that's all."

She stared at him, unblinking. "I don't buy it."

Tristan didn't reply.

Emily gently pushed him up so he was looking at her. "How did you explain it to your grandpa?"

He tried to dodge, giving her a sheepish grin. "I just said something vague. It's nothing."

Emily kept her eyes on him. "Steven Davis isn't easy to fool. He knows you got into a fight with Andrew, doesn't he?"

Tristan hesitated, then nodded. "He knows. But it's alright, I'll handle it."

Tristan felt the warmth in his chest. "Okay. Got it."

"Are you working late tonight?" Emily asked.

"Probably another half hour," Tristan replied. "I'll need to get back to it after we talk."

Emily nodded and pulled him up with her. "Alright, go get your work done."

Tristan looked disappointed, holding onto her hand a little tighter. "You're leaving already?"

Emily met his gaze. "No, I'm not. I don't have any plans tonight. I'll stay here with you. When you're done, I'll head out."

Tristan's whole face lit up, his smile reaching his eyes. "Alright. Let me show you my office, then. I've been here a while and still haven't given you the grand tour."

Something clicked in his mind, and he turned to her. "By the way, why didn't you come find me as soon as you got here?"
