Isabella’s mom texted, “Thank you for saying that. I feel so much better now. I’ll be waiting for your good news.”
Amelia sent back a cute emoji and ended the chat. She tossed her phone aside, flopped down on the bed, and let out a heavy sigh with her eyes closed.
After a minute, she opened her eyes and just stared at the ceiling.
This can’t keep happening. It just can’t.
Isabella was still stuck in there, and her mom was running herself into the ground trying to help, pinning all her hopes on Amelia. She had to figure out a way to get Kevin Lane to help. She needed him to agree. She couldn’t go back on her word.
Amelia clenched her teeth, her mind spinning, but nothing came to her.
Well, there was one thing she could do. One thing that would probably make Kevin say yes.
But honestly, it was a terrible idea. Especially for Dennis.
She could feel her nerves buzzing, her mind and heart completely unsettled.
Was there any other option?
No. There really wasn’t.
Totally defeated, Amelia dragged herself up, opened a drawer, and pulled out a small bottle of pills. She gripped it so tightly her palm started to sweat.
This was her last shot.
She looked tormented, her brow so furrowed it felt like her face was folding in on itself. She stared at the bottle in her hand, then glanced over at her phone and read Isabella’s mom’s messages again.
Her eyes started to sting with tears. She just sat there for a long time before letting out another deep sigh.
She stuffed the bottle into her pocket and stood up.
She couldn’t eat anymore either. She set her chopsticks down.
After cleaning her hands and mouth, she turned and gently ruffled his hair. “Why are you looking at me like that?”
Dennis rubbed his eyes and whispered, “Auntie, is there anything else we can do? I want to see Mom.”
Amelia froze, her hand falling to her side. She looked at him, searching his face.
Dennis’s voice got a little more urgent. “Auntie, is there any way I can see Mom? I remember you said something before, about me getting sick or something like that. I didn’t really get it. Can you tell me again?”
Amelia’s heart skipped a beat. She quickly covered his mouth with her hand and glanced toward the door. “Keep your voice down,” she whispered.
Dennis’s eyes went wide, but he nodded.
Amelia let her hand drop, looking at him uncertainly. “If it meant seeing your mom… would you be willing to get sick?”
