Kevin Lane picked up the newspaper again, pretending to read, but his mind was clearly somewhere else.
Amelia noticed right away. She smiled to herself and slipped out of the room.
She ducked into the next room and reached for Dennis’s hand. He was clutching a custard bun for later and looked up at her, curiosity all over his face. “Aunt Amelia, why are you smiling?”
Ethan walked on Dennis’s other side and glanced over at Amelia, waiting for her answer.
Amelia’s eyes sparkled with mischief. “You’ll find out soon enough,” she teased.
She was almost certain her plan had worked.
Dennis blinked at her. “Find out what?”
Amelia gently patted the back of his head. “Honestly, I should be thanking you.”
Both Dennis and Ethan exchanged confused looks. No matter how many times they tried to get more out of her, Amelia just kept quiet. Eventually, they gave up and lost interest.
On the drive back to The Lane Estate, Amelia’s phone buzzed with another message from Isabella Austin’s mom.
Amelia, how are things going?
Amelia, I’m so sorry for all the messages. I hope I’m not bothering you. I’m just really worried about Isabella.
In the past, Amelia would have hesitated, unsure of what to say. Now she didn’t think twice. She quickly texted back, Don’t worry.
Isabella’s mom replied right away with a smiling emoji.
Amelia grinned and tossed her phone aside.
That night, after she left Dennis’s room, Amelia finally accepted a video call from Kevin. He was still in the hospital and had messaged her earlier saying he wanted to talk to Dennis.
Amelia had played along, waiting a few minutes before replying that Dennis was still playing and didn’t want to talk yet. She told Kevin to try again later, not bothering to ask Dennis what he wanted.
Kevin hadn’t argued.
Now, half an hour later, Kevin skipped the messages and called her directly.
She walked into the living room and froze for a second. “Grandpa, you’re back already?”
She hurried over. “Did the doctor say you could come home?”
Kevin gave a short nod.
It was freezing outside, and the forecast said it might snow soon. Kevin had come in wearing a thick down coat. After a few minutes in the warm living room, he started to get hot.
Amelia helped him take off his coat and handed it to one of the maids.
Once the maid left, Kevin took a sip of hot water and glanced toward the second floor. “Dennis isn’t here?”
“It’s Monday, so I took him to kindergarten,” Amelia explained. “Did you want to see him?”
Kevin frowned. “Why did he go back so soon? I told you he could take a few more days off. Didn’t you ask him if he wanted to stay home?”
“I did,” Amelia said smoothly. “He said he was fine, so I took him.”
