Dennis’s lips quivered even harder, and tears streamed down his cheeks. “Grandpa, didn’t you already forgive me?”

Kevin took a calm sip of water. “I forgave you, but your dad hasn’t. So you’re staying right there on your knees.”

Dennis let out a frustrated grunt and turned his head away, cheeks puffed with indignation.

Just then, a maid walked over and leaned in to whisper to Kevin, “Mr. Lane, Ms. Gomez hasn’t had dinner yet. Should I take something up to her?”

Kevin looked up. “Where’s Ethan?”

The maid kept her voice low. “Mr. Ethan called earlier. He said he’ll be home very late tonight.”

Kevin nodded. “No need then. Ethan will bring her something when he gets back.”

The maid nodded and left quietly.

After a while, Kevin finally told Dennis he could get up. The butler helped Dennis to his feet, and Dennis shuffled past his grandfather, still rubbing his sore knees with a pitiful look.

The butler picked up the pillow Dennis had knelt on, now flat and misshapen, and placed it back on the couch.

Kevin spoke up again, his voice relaxed. “Don’t forget, you still need to write a letter of apology. Your dad will want to see it when he gets home.”

Dennis pouted even more, mumbling, “I know, Grandpa. My knees really hurt.”

Kevin glanced at the pillow beside him. “Let the butler get you some ointment.”

Dennis scowled and trudged upstairs, clearly not in the mood.

Upstairs, he took the ointment from the butler’s hands. “You can go back downstairs, Grandpa Alfred. I’ll ask my aunt to help me with the ointment.”

The butler hesitated. “Well...” He thought of Amelia’s hands, still sore from earlier. She probably didn’t want to see anyone right now.

“Dennis, Ms. Gomez might already be asleep,” he said gently. “Why don’t you let me help you? No need to trouble her, okay?”

Dennis scratched his head, still confused, and let the butler guide him to his room.

Inside her room, Amelia leaned against the door, letting out a shaky breath. Now that everything was out in the open, Kevin had already punished her. What she hadn’t expected was Andrew coming back.

For now, Andrew was gone. She had no idea what he’d say or do when he returned. She knew he was much harsher than Kevin. She had crossed a line touching his son, and she dreaded what would happen next.

Amelia glanced nervously around her room. She decided it was better to just stay inside. If Andrew came back and called for her, she wouldn’t answer. He wouldn’t be staying for long anyway. She’d just wait until he left.

That thought brought her a small sense of relief. She sat on the edge of her bed and picked up the ointment she’d used on Dennis a few days before. There was still plenty left.

She wrinkled her nose at the sharp smell and carefully scooped some out, spreading it gently over her own sore hands. Even after all this time, her palms were still red and swollen, looking almost unnatural.

After she finished, Amelia held her hands up and stared at them sadly. No way could she hold a paintbrush like this for the next few days.

She let out a long sigh and flopped back onto her bed, staring at the ceiling.
