She slipped her phone back into her bag and stepped into the elevator.
What she didn’t see was that as Tristan’s car pulled away from her company, Andrew’s car drove right past it and stopped right out front.
Once Tristan was out of sight, Andrew got out of his car. He looked sharp in a tailored suit, holding a small gift bag. The logo on the bag was from some boutique designer, the kind only insiders would recognize.
Beatty followed him out. “Mr. Lane, do you want me to go with you?”
Andrew shook his head. “It’s fine. I’ll just be a minute.”
Beatty smiled. “Alright. I’ll wait here for you.”
He nodded and walked toward the building.
Beatty looked up at the building, eyes shining. She’d admired Emily Blair for a long time, ever since she started seeing news about her. Emily wasn’t born with connections, but she’d built a name for herself in this city, and in the tech world, no less. It couldn’t have been easy. It must have taken a kind of strength and skill that even most men didn’t have if she wanted to make it this far in such a male-dominated industry.
What Beatty hadn’t expected was that Andrew Lane’s crush would turn out to be Emily Blair.
Her expression shifted as she thought about it.
This trip, she was filling in for Andrew’s regular executive assistant. Normally, someone with more experience would have come, but Beatty had asked to tag along, saying she wanted to learn and gain more experience. Andrew had agreed almost instantly, not even hesitating.
Compared to the other assistants and secretaries, this was a huge privilege. The usual assistant clearly wasn’t happy about being replaced, but Beatty didn’t let it bother her.
She watched as Andrew walked into the lobby, exchanged a few words with the receptionist, then turned and left without even waiting a full minute.
When he came back, Beatty couldn’t help but ask, “That was quick. You’re not going up to say hi, Mr. Lane?”
Of course. Andrew Lane.
Emily’s brows drew together.
The receptionist saw her reaction and quickly explained, “Ms. Blair, it’s not that I didn’t let him come up. I invited him, but Mr. Lane said he was busy and just wanted to leave the gift. I offered to call you, but he said it wasn’t necessary. I really didn’t want to push, so I just brought it up myself.”
Andrew Lane wasn’t a client. They’d never worked together. By the book, the receptionist shouldn’t have accepted the gift at all, much less brought it up to Emily.
But Andrew Lane’s face was almost as famous as his business. Practically everyone knew who he was, and the receptionist was no exception.
So when someone like Andrew Lane showed up, even without an appointment or any official reason, she’d taken the package and made sure it got delivered.
