She never liked wasting money, and even now, that hadn’t changed.

Just one look at the diamond earrings told Emily they cost a fortune. The thought of tossing them out left her torn. Part of her wanted to keep them, just because it seemed such a waste.

But then she remembered who bought them. These were from Andrew Lane, with his money, not hers. If she threw them away, he’d be the one losing out, not her.

She stared at her phone, face unreadable, and typed back, “Fine. Don’t regret this.”

Andrew replied almost instantly. “I won’t.”

Emily slumped back into her chair. The gift bag and velvet box were already trashed, crushed under her heel. She pulled out the earrings, ditched the packaging, and buzzed Sadie to come in.

After everything that happened, Emily had given Sadie a long break. She’d only just come back to work, and honestly, she seemed even sharper than before.

Sadie had gotten hurt while traveling with Emily for work, so the company called it a workplace injury. The compensation wasn’t much, though.

Today, Emily decided to give the two-million-dollar earrings to Sadie. It felt like a fair way to make up for what she’d been through.

Sadie knocked and walked in. “Ms. Blair, you wanted to see me?”

Emily waved her over and dropped the earrings into her hand.

Sadie blinked in confusion. “Ms. Blair, what’s this?”

Emily’s voice was even. “They’re for you. I never gave you a proper welcome-back present. So, here you go.”

Sadie’s face broke into a real smile. She held the earrings up to the light, turning them slowly. The big center diamond and all the little side stones sparkled like crazy.

“For me?”

Emily nodded.

Emily looked at the earrings, then back at Sadie. “I’m giving them to you. You don’t have to worry about whether you deserve them. Just take them.”

Sadie bit her lip, torn. She wanted them so badly, but it was just too much.

“Ms. Blair, maybe you could give me something else? These are worth more than two years of my salary. If I keep them at home, I’ll just worry about someone breaking in to steal them. I honestly don’t know what to do.”

Emily looked away. “Just take them. You’ve earned this, and it’s compensation too. If you don’t accept them, I’ll be the one who’s worried.”

Sadie opened her mouth to argue again, but Emily cut her off.

“That’s enough. Take them and get back to work.”

Sadie stopped fighting it. She picked up the earrings carefully, thanked Emily, and left the office, still looking a little stunned.
