Her friend’s eyes lit up like she’d just cracked some big mystery. “Ohhh, I get it now.”

Sadie really didn’t like gossiping about her boss, so she gave her friend’s shoulder a gentle pat. “Exactly, so maybe you shouldn’t say stuff like that anymore.”

But her friend just tilted her head, thinking it over. “So, you’re saying it’s totally one-sided, then?”

If Sadie had been drinking water, she definitely would have spit it out right then.

“What are you even talking about? No way. I already told you, if Andrew Lane actually liked my boss, with all his money and power, there’s no way he would have just watched from the sidelines when she was starting her company. He clearly doesn’t like her. That’s why he acts the way he does. And besides, Andrew Lane’s been married and divorced already. He has a son. When you say things like that, you make it sound like my boss is his side chick or something. That’s just not right. She’s an amazing woman. Honestly, I don’t think Andrew Lane is even good enough for her.”

“And, most importantly, she has a boyfriend now. He’s hot, he’s successful, and they’re super into each other.”

Her friend frowned, thinking it over. “You know what, you’re right. This whole rumor must be fake.”

Sadie lifted her chin, looking confident. “Of course it’s fake. No way it’s true.”

Her friend nodded along, trying to look serious.

But after saying all that, Sadie couldn’t help feeling a little guilty for talking about her boss behind her back. She kept getting this weird sense that her boss was standing right there, silently listening to every word.

She pressed her lips together, forcing the thought away.

And then, out of nowhere...

“Hello, ladies…”

That voice. The one she’d just heard a little while ago. It came from right behind them, and Sadie immediately felt goosebumps crawl up her arms.

She and her friend turned around, hearts pounding, and there was Andrew Lane, somehow standing right behind them. He was looking down, silent, just watching.

Another pinch.

Her friend winced. “We were just… just saying random stuff. Please don’t take it seriously.”

Sadie felt numb. If she could, she’d put tape straight over her friend’s mouth.

Andrew Lane just smiled, the corners of his lips barely turning up. “Oh? What were you talking about? Why don’t you tell me?”

Sadie jumped in, catching on that maybe he hadn’t heard anything after all. “It was nothing. Really, just small talk. Nothing you’d care about, Mr. Lane.”

Andrew looked at the two of them and let out a quiet laugh. “Is that so?”

Her friend tried to act calm, nodding way too hard. “Yes, really. That’s all.”
