Emma stopped in her tracks.
She had just tried calling Emily because it was getting late and Emily still wasn’t home. But it wasn’t Emily who picked up. It was Tristan Davis. Hearing his voice had given her a bit of a shock.
It was almost midnight by then. Emma couldn’t help but wonder what Emily and Tristan were doing together this late at night. Before she could let her imagination get carried away, Tristan told her that Emily was busy, couldn’t come to the phone, and wouldn’t be home tonight.
Emma wasn’t sure if he was telling the truth, but she felt a little relieved anyway. She gave him a few reminders and hung up.
She should have gone to bed, but for some reason, she just couldn’t settle down. Her mind wouldn’t stop racing.
That was why she ended up going downstairs to take out the trash. And that’s when she ran into Andrew Lane.
Emma’s brows knit together. “What does this have to do with you? I’m heading back inside. You should leave.”
Andrew stepped closer, his eyes searching her face. “So, you know where Emily is, don’t you?”
Emma crossed her arms. “I’m her mom. Of course I know.”
Andrew’s voice was tight with worry. “Can you tell me? I haven’t been able to reach her. Honestly, I’m getting anxious. I even tried her assistant, but she can’t get through either.”
Emma didn’t bother to sugarcoat it. “Emily already blocked you. Isn’t it obvious why you can’t reach her? Stop bothering me. Go home. I’m going back in.”
Andrew caught her by the wrist. “I just want to know where she is. I just need to know she’s safe. Once I know, I’ll leave. I won’t bother you anymore.”
Emma yanked her hand, getting irritated. “Let go of me. Right now. Why should I tell you anything? Let go…”
Andrew lowered his voice, his eyes pleading. “Please. I just need to know she’s okay.”
He knew he wouldn’t be able to relax until he heard Emily’s voice for himself.
He spoke quietly. “Ma’am, please call her one more time. If I hear her voice, I’ll leave. I swear.”
Emma frowned. “Why should I do what you say? Let go. Now.”
“If you don’t call, I’m not letting go,” Andrew said simply.
Emma clenched her jaw, furious. “You really have no shame, do you?”
Andrew didn’t even flinch at her insult. “Please, ma’am. I just want to know she’s okay. As soon as I hear her, I’ll go. I promise.”
Emma looked around. It was freezing out here and she wasn’t dressed for this. Just standing there for a few minutes was enough to make her shiver. All she wanted was to get back inside where it was warm.
