Rose had always known she wasn’t the smartest, so she never tried to act clever or take matters into her own hands. She didn’t overthink it. She just texted back, “Everything’s fine. Thanks for checking in.”

“She said no again.”

The male officer held up his phone to show his partner.

The female officer’s brow creased.

“In that case, let’s just wait and see,” the male officer said.

They’d seen this before. When someone was too scared to talk to the police, it usually meant one of two things. Either there had been a kidnapping and the family was warned not to call for help, or they’d done something wrong themselves and were afraid to get the cops involved. If it was the first one, it was best not to make any waves.

So the male officer just replied, “Alright,” and left it at that.

On the other end, Rose finally let herself relax.

The female officer sat quietly, lost in thought. Suddenly, she looked up as if something important had just hit her.

“Where’s Emily Blair?” she asked.

Everyone in the room seemed to snap to attention.

The male officer blinked. “Yeah, where is Emily Blair?”

Emily wasn’t family to the victim or the suspect, but she had a long history with Isabella Austin. She’d always been deeply involved in this case, just as much as the victim’s family, and she always pushed for the harshest punishment. From the very beginning, Emily was the one leading the charge. Rose and her grandmother mostly followed her lead, helping out when they could. They leaned on Emily to keep things moving forward and always did what she suggested.

So if Rose and her grandmother were suddenly ready to forgive Isabella Austin, how could Emily possibly be okay with that? And why wasn’t she here for something this important?

They’d finally noticed what they’d been missing.

With a decision this big, Emily should have been there.

That didn’t put the officer at ease at all. If anything, it made him more suspicious. Emily not being able to take the call right now just didn’t feel right. His frown deepened. “And your name?”

“Tristan Davis.”

The officer thought back, remembering the man who was always around Emily.

“What I need to talk about is extremely important,” he said. “Could you please wake her up? It’ll only take a minute. You two don’t need to come in. We just need her to answer a couple of questions. Can you help us out?”

Tristan’s answer was calm but firm. “It’s really not a good time. She’s already asleep. Whatever it is, just wait until she wakes up, okay?”

The officer felt his doubts growing with every word.

“Mr. Davis, this really is urgent. We have to reach Ms. Blair right away. It won’t take long, I promise. Please, we really need your cooperation.”
