The female officer leaned closer. “But your boss told me to come here and find her. Isn’t she in?”
The security guard blinked a few times, suddenly more serious. “Boss? Which boss do you mean?”
She replied, “Ms. Blair. She called me and said she was still at the office. Is she here or not? Can I go upstairs to see her?”
The guard snorted, eyes full of skepticism, like he thought she was just some random cousin from the countryside pretending to have a connection.
He waved her off. “Come on, don’t make up stories if you don’t know what’s going on. Move along. Don’t stir up trouble here.”
She looked more desperate. “I mean it, she really just called me and said she was here. She asked me to come see her. Please, just open the door and let me in.”
He was growing more annoyed by the second. “Look around. Besides the light at my desk, do you see any other lights on in the whole building? Everyone’s gone. Stop causing a scene and get out of here.”
The officer hesitated, her voice softer. “That can’t be. Ms. Blair said she was still here. Maybe she just turned off the lights and fell asleep. I promise I’m telling the truth. Please, just let me in.”
The guard’s tone turned sharp, his brow furrowed. “I already told you, she’s not here. Ms. Blair left at eight. She hasn’t come back. Sounds to me like someone tricked you with a fake call. If you got scammed, go find the police. Don’t waste my time.”
Hearing that, the officer’s eyes darted with uncertainty.
The first guard shook his head, fed up. “No idea who she is. She says she knows Ms. Blair and that Ms. Blair’s still upstairs. She wants to go up there, but I told her Ms. Blair left ages ago. She doesn’t believe me and keeps trying to get in.”
The other guards chuckled, eyeing the officer’s clothes.
One of them said, “Ma’am, you should just head home. It’s freezing out here. No need to stand in the cold.”
But she shook her head stubbornly. “No, I need to go up and see Ms. Blair.”
They shared an amused look. “Even if Ms. Blair hadn’t already left, do you have an appointment? Without one, you’re not getting upstairs anyway.”
