The security guard took the sticky note, waving them away. “Go on, get moving. It’s freezing out here.”

The officer gave a quick goodbye with a smile, but as soon as she turned around, her expression turned serious. “Emily Blair’s mom and boyfriend both say she’s at work, but she’s not there. From what we know, something’s definitely happened to Emily Blair.”

Her colleague frowned. “But none of her family have filed a report. We can’t really launch a formal investigation without that.”

Standing by the car, the cold wind tugged at the officer’s hair. She looked worried. “Yeah, I know.”

She glanced up and spotted Rose Ward and her group crouched on the sidewalk nearby, speaking in hushed voices. Their car was parked just a few feet away.

She exchanged a glance with her partner and slipped quietly into their own car. “Let’s drive over and see what they’re up to.”

They rolled up slowly behind the group. The officer leaned forward, peering out the window. Rose Ward was clutching a folder in one hand and a lighter in the other, looking ready to set the papers on fire.

The officer’s eyes caught the label on the folder right away.

Without wasting a second, she pushed open the door and strode over. “What are you doing?”

Rose and the others jumped, almost dropping both the lighter and the file.

The officer’s sharp eyes caught the lawyer’s phone. The screen was still on, clearly recording.

The lawyer noticed and quickly put the phone away, acting like nothing was happening.

Rose’s heart raced. She grabbed her grandmother’s hand and stood up, glancing around. Four police officers were there, watching.

She pressed her lips together and asked quietly, “Why are you here?”

The officer pointed to the folder clutched in her hand. “What were you just doing?”

Rose froze. “What?”

The officer looked straight at her. “Emily Blair. She’s been kidnapped, hasn’t she?”

Rose’s face gave her away. No matter how hard she tried to stay calm, the tiny shifts in her expression were impossible to hide.

The officer saw it all and felt sure she was right.

“I’m right, aren’t I?” she pressed.

Rose bit down on her lip. “No, you’re not. That’s not what’s happening.”

The officer’s voice was cool and steady. “You know the truth better than anyone. As a police officer, it’s my job to keep people safe. I get it, the kidnapper probably threatened you, told you not to involve the police, pushed you to destroy evidence or sign some kind of agreement. Maybe they’ve already shown you they can hurt Emily Blair. That’s why you’re scrambling like this, am I right?”
