Tristan looked like he was barely holding it together. Elizabeth walked over, her voice barely above a whisper. “Did Emily just tell us not to work with Benjamin?”

He nodded, not taking his eyes off the screen.

Elizabeth’s thoughts were spinning. “Why would she say that?”

Tristan set his phone aside and headed over to the three men hunched over their laptops. He leaned in to check what they were doing. “Any progress?”

This time, instead of shaking their heads, the men all nodded.

“The call lasted long enough for us to pick up his signal,” one of them said. “We’ve found a solid lead. Give us a little more time and we’ll have the kidnapper’s exact location.”

That was exactly what everyone needed to hear. Relief flickered across Elizabeth’s face. “That’s amazing.”

But Tristan didn’t look any happier. His frown only deepened. “As soon as possible. Every second counts.”

A knot tightened in his gut. Emily had openly contradicted Benjamin right in front of him. With Benjamin’s temper, she was bound to pay for it.

He tried not to imagine what that meant. For now, all he could do was force himself to focus. He pulled up a chair and started scanning Benjamin’s data along with the others.

Elizabeth spoke softly, almost to herself. “Maybe Emily knows something the rest of us don’t. Or maybe she has a plan. That could be why she told us not to help Benjamin.”

Tristan shook his head. “We have no idea what she’s dealing with. Let’s not assume anything good.”

Time was slipping away too quickly for distractions. His voice came out sharper than he meant.

Elizabeth hesitated, then gave a small nod. “You’re right.”

She pressed her lips together and stepped back, waiting quietly, not wanting to get in the way.

A cold gust whipped past. Elizabeth glanced up just as a tiny snowflake floated down. She held out her hand, catching it as it melted on her palm.

He couldn’t let that happen.

Andrew typed out a message to Benjamin. I’ll come over. Let Emily go.

Thirty seconds later, Benjamin replied. What is with all of you? Did Emily put you under a spell or something? First Tristan, now you—everyone wants to take her place.

Everyone wants to take her place. So Tristan had already tried to make the trade and been shot down.

But Andrew felt like Benjamin might actually say yes this time.

He was different from Tristan. Because of Isabella Austin, Benjamin hated Andrew, but thanks to the Lane family and their shared blood, Benjamin had never really been able to do anything about it.

This time, Andrew was practically handing himself over.

And he knew Benjamin wouldn’t be able to resist.
