Benjamin slid into the driver’s seat and took the wheel himself. He started the engine but didn’t hit the gas right away. Instead, he glanced up, eyes dark and searching, catching Andrew’s reflection in the rearview mirror.

“Hold on,” Benjamin said.

The two men flanking Andrew tensed up, eyes sharp with suspicion. “What’s wrong?”

Andrew looked up too, meeting Benjamin’s gaze head-on.

Benjamin’s mouth tilted into a sly smile. “Did you check his mouth?”

The guy who’d searched Andrew froze, a flicker of panic crossing his face. “Sorry, I haven’t yet. I’ll do it now.”

Benjamin didn’t seem bothered. He just rested a hand on the steering wheel and gave a lazy nod. “Better hurry. You’d be surprised what people can hide in there.”

The man turned to Andrew, face set and voice rough. “Open up. Let me see.”

Andrew kept his cool, quietly swallowing the tracker hidden under his tongue before obediently opening his mouth.

Nobody noticed the tiny movement.

With Benjamin watching, the man was extra thorough. He even ran his fingers through Andrew’s hair, searching every possible place something could be hidden.

After ten long minutes, he came up empty. Benjamin finally looked satisfied.

“Alright, that’s enough. Tie his hands and feet.”

The two men moved in, silent and efficient, binding Andrew’s wrists behind his back. They tied his ankles, calves, and thighs to the seat so tightly he couldn’t move at all.

Benjamin looked at Andrew and suddenly laughed. “Andrew Lane, I never thought I’d see the day you’d end up in my hands. How does it feel?”

Andrew’s expression stayed calm, his voice steady. “Just drive. I want to see Emily.”

Benjamin scoffed, finally pressing the gas. “Relax. You’ll see her soon enough. What’s the hurry?”

Then he added, “Blindfold him too.”

Darkness swallowed Andrew’s vision. Time slipped away. He had no idea how long they drove before the car finally rolled to a stop. Everything was quiet.

The door opened. The two men pulled him out, holding him tight as footsteps approached.

Benjamin’s voice came from beside him. “Take it off.”

The blindfold came away. Andrew blinked, following the sound of footsteps until his eyes landed on Emily, tied to a tree stump.

His gaze swept over her, pausing on her bandaged arm. Benjamin had kept his promise and treated her wound. At least he hadn’t made it worse.

But then Andrew saw the fresh, angry handprint on her left cheek. His eyes narrowed, the anger flickering inside him.

Emily looked like she couldn’t believe what she was seeing. Her brows drew together, eyes wide with shock.

Seeing her like this, Andrew couldn’t help but feel a little lighter. He even managed a grin. “We meet again.”

Emily stared at him. “Why are you here?”

Benjamin sauntered over, smirking. “He came for you. You touched?”

Emily’s frown only deepened.
