Looking down at the back of his head, the thought hit her:

She owed him big time for this. Again.

She closed her eyes, her fingers curling tighter into his jacket.

Suddenly, a distinct rustling sound tore through the silence dead ahead.

"Freeze! We finally got you!"

Emily's eyes snapped open in absolute panic.

Three of Benjamin's mercenaries had materialized out of the dark, blocking their path entirely. The moonlight glinted off the long blades in their hands as they stared them down.

Running completely dark without flashlights, the trio had ambushed them flawlessly. Emily couldn't fathom how they had tracked them so efficiently after being left miles behind.

Andrew ground to a halt, his chest heaving heavily.

One of the mercs laughed, a dark, nasty sound. "You can run all you want, but you ain't getting out of this forest."

"When you're done playing tag, come back with us. We'll show you a real good time," the guy sneered. "Don't even think about making a break for it. The entire perimeter is locked down with our guys. Nowhere to hide."

Emily's blood ran cold. She forced herself to study their gear.

It hit her instantly. Their tactical wear was totally different from the crew stationed at the cabin. This was an entirely separate kill squad.

Her stomach plummeted.

Just how much muscle did Benjamin have flooding these woods?

Her spiraling thoughts were shattered by Andrew's low command: "Hold tight."

She barely had a second to process it before instinct took over, wrapping her arms in a death grip around his neck.

Without another word, Andrew executed a flawless pivot and bolted into the tree line.
