In this standout chapter of the Romance novel My Great Escape Led Me to You (Emily Blair), Aileen Green introduces new challenges, powerful emotions, and major plot progress that captivate readers from beginning to end.

Emily was feeling too lazy to move. Curled up on the bed, she scrolled through her phone. "You go ahead. I just want to lie down."

Elizabeth didn't push it. "Alright, then. I'm heading out. I'll be back before we need to leave for the airport. If I lose track of time, just come find me on the fifth floor."

"Got it," Emily murmured, her attention still on her phone.

Elizabeth grabbed her own phone and walked to the door. Her hand on the doorknob, she paused and turned back. "Emily, have you seen Andrew Lane today?"

Emily's expression didn't change. "Let me guess, you've cooked up another one of your theories?"

"Hey, be nice," Elizabeth said with a frown. "No need for personal attacks."

Emily shrugged. "Just calling it like I see it."

Elizabeth walked over and sat on the edge of the bed. "You've been in a low mood these past few days because of Andrew Lane. You're still in a low mood today. I reasonably suspect it's because of him again."

Emily was speechless for a moment. "I think you should channel your energy into your work, or at least having fun, instead of gossip. Your conclusions are getting more and more ridiculous."

"Don't try to change the subject, Emily. You think I can't guess?" Elizabeth pressed.

"Guess what?"

"That power bank wasn't from a staff member, was it?"

Emily slowly looked up. Elizabeth's gaze was sharp as she stared her down, her eyes narrowed.

"I bet it was from Andrew Lane, wasn't it?" Elizabeth demanded. "Was it?"

Emily's grip on her phone tightened slightly, but her face remained impassive. There was really no need to lie about it; it wasn't some shameful secret.

So she said, "How did you know?"

Elizabeth let out a triumphant scoff, her eyebrows raised high in satisfaction. "I asked at the restaurant. A lot of people needed power banks last night, and no one could get one. Why would a staff member randomly single us out to deliver one? I knew right away it had to be from Andrew."

After watching TV for a while, Emily felt a wave of drowsiness. She snuggled under the covers and fell into a deep sleep.

Sometime later, she stirred, her eyes opening in a hazy, half-awake state. A wave of heat washed over her, and she could feel a layer of sweat on her back, as if she were trapped in an oven. Her head was fuzzy, and her whole body felt limp and drained of energy.

Frowning, Emily gritted her teeth and pushed herself up. She reached for her phone on the nightstand and squinted, trying to make out the time on the screen.

By her calculations, she had only been asleep for half an hour.

Feeling defeated, she let herself flop back onto the soft bed.

She raised a hand to her forehead, which was slick with sweat and burning hot.

Even in her muddled state, Emily knew what was happening. She had a fever.

She closed her eyes and rested for a moment, listening to her own heavy breathing.
