In the reflection on the elevator wall, Emily finally saw how disheveled and unwell she looked. Her hair was a mess, and the sweatshirt she’d thrown on was crooked. The entire picture was a far cry from the composed image she usually presented to the world.

She closed her eyes, unable to look, then opened them again with a start.

She had forgotten to press the button again.

She glanced at the panel and saw that the button for the clinic's floor was already lit, and a small wave of relief washed over her.

When the floor arrived, Emily moved to support herself against the wall as she exited, but once again, Andrew forcefully took hold of her, half-carrying her out.

She struggled a few times, but his grip was firm.

"Don't move around so much," he said in a low voice. "You might fall."

Defeated, Emily had no choice but to let him guide her.

Fortunately, the clinic was not far from the elevator, and they arrived in under a minute.

The doctor took her temperature.

39.2 degrees Celsius. It was a high fever.

He prescribed some fever-reducing medication. Andrew poured her a glass of warm water, and she took the pills.

"Go back and get some sleep," the doctor advised. "If the fever hasn't broken when you wake up, don't rush to take another dose. It's not good for you. Wait until after dinner."

"Thank you, Doctor."

Emily took the small bag of medicine, but Andrew took it from her almost immediately.

He helped her up from the chair.

As they stood waiting for the elevator, Emily tried to pull away. "I can manage on my own."

Andrew suddenly reached out, cupped her chin, and turned her face towards him.

Elizabeth's end went quiet for a second, and then Emily saw her friend's head poke out from their doorway.

Elizabeth's eyes first lit up, but then her expression shifted to one of wary suspicion, and finally condemnation, as she saw Andrew with his arm around Emily.

She stared for a long moment, her eyes widening as she noticed the bag of medicine in Andrew's hand and Emily's obviously pale face. She hurried over.

"Emily, are you sick?"

Emily nodded weakly. "I have a fever."

"A fever? Just now?" Elizabeth asked, shocked. "I was only gone for a little while and you got a fever?"

Emily felt exasperated herself. The illness had come on so suddenly, with no warning, hitting her with full force.

Andrew silently helped Emily to her bed.

Exhausted from the short walk, Emily kicked off her shoes, took off her sweatshirt, and collapsed onto the bed, pulling the covers over herself, ignoring the other two in the room.
