Emily’s driver was already waiting at the curb. Elizabeth wheeled their two suitcases over to him.

Emily pulled her coat tighter. After sleeping for three and a half hours, her fever seemed to have subsided a bit, but she still felt dizzy and heavy.

She cleared her throat and said to Andrew, “This is far enough, Mr. Lane. I’m heading home now. What are your plans? Do you need a ride?”

Instead of answering, Andrew walked over and placed the back of his hand against her forehead. He dropped it a moment later and looked down at her. “My driver is on the way. Go home and get some rest. If you still have a fever tomorrow, go straight to the hospital.”

Emily nodded. “I know. We’ll be going, then.”

Elizabeth held the car door open for her, and Emily slid inside without another glance at Andrew.

Having slept the entire flight, Emily wasn’t the least bit drowsy in the car. She was just exhausted, leaning her head against the seat and watching the city lights streak past the window. Night had already fallen, and the capital’s neon glow was always captivating, a sea of lights from countless homes and cars.

Elizabeth checked her forehead again. “Seems like the fever has gone down a bit.”

Emily hunched her shoulders, burying her face deeper into her coat.

Seeing her like that, Elizabeth didn’t have the heart to ask any more questions. “We’ll be home in about fifteen minutes. Just hang in there.”

When they arrived, Elizabeth helped Emily inside. Emma George was sitting on the sofa, a worried expression on her face. The moment she heard the door open, she shot to her feet.

Seeing Emily’s pale face, Emma was startled. “Oh my, what happened?” She rushed over to support Emily from the other side.

Elizabeth had already retrieved the medicine from her luggage and was heading to the kitchen. “Don’t try to persuade her, ma’am. She’s been on a plane for hours. Let her rest. She’s an adult; she knows what she’s doing.”

Emma sighed. “I’ll at least get the thermometer to check her temperature.”

Elizabeth nodded, tearing open a packet and stirring the powder into a glass of warm water.

After drinking the medicine, Emily fell asleep. Elizabeth was exhausted too, so she left soon after.

Worried sick, Emma barely slept a wink all night, constantly getting up to check on Emily.

When Emily woke the next morning, her head was spinning even more than before. Her body felt impossibly heavy, her limbs ached, and every breath she took was hot, a sign of a high fever.
