“I know,” Emily said softly.

She walked out of her room, phone in hand, and called for Emma. Hearing the sound of Emma frantically getting ready to take her to the hospital, Tristan felt a small measure of relief. “I’ll let you go,” he said. “I don’t want to keep you.”

Emily hummed in agreement.

“Listen to the doctor, get plenty of rest, and take your medicine,” he added. “Don’t rush back to work. Your health is the most important thing.”

Emma was pulling Emily along, throwing a coat over her shoulders. “Put this on before we go out,” she commanded.

“I will,” Emily said into the phone.

Perhaps because she was sick, Tristan’s voice sounded especially soft and gentle. “I’ll hang up now.”

With her muddled brain, Emily just nodded, forgetting for a moment that he couldn’t see her. When she realized the call hadn’t ended, she belatedly tapped the screen to hang up.

At the hospital, Emma told her to sit down and wait while she rushed off to handle the registration.

As Emily sat there, she got a call from Andrew. She hesitated for a moment before answering. “Mr. Lane.”

“Still have a fever?” Andrew’s deep voice came through the phone.

Emily glanced at Emma’s back in the queue. “I’m at the hospital.”

Andrew paused. “Which one?”

Even with her brain feeling like mush, Emily knew she needed to keep her distance from the man on the other end of the line. “My mom’s with me, Mr. Lane,” she said, her tone polite but distant. “You don’t need to worry.”

Soon enough, she was hooked up to an IV drip. Emma bustled around, getting her a cup of hot water before announcing she was going to buy breakfast. She told Emily not to fall asleep so she could watch the IV and call the nurse when it needed changing.

Emily readily agreed. She tried to distract herself with her phone, but she was too dizzy to focus on anything. Before she even realized it, her eyelids were growing heavy. She managed one last, difficult glance at the IV bag—it was still mostly full. Reassured, her head lolled to the side, and she drifted off to sleep.

She wasn’t sure how long she’d been out, but she woke to a sharp pain in her neck. Keeping her eyes closed, she raised a hand to rub it, only to feel the IV needle still taped to her skin. She switched hands.

Taking a deep breath, she finally opened her eyes and looked up at the IV bag. The fluid level was about the same as when she had fallen asleep, so she assumed she hadn't been out for long. But when she checked the time on her phone, she stared at the screen for a long moment, shocked to see that an hour had passed.

“Don’t bother looking. I had the nurse change the bag.”

Andrew’s voice suddenly came from her right. Emily jumped, turning to see him sitting beside her. He was dressed in a sharp suit, his hair perfectly styled, his long legs crossed elegantly. He looked as if he were on his way to an important event.
