That night, Elisa nestled against my shoulder, a faint sadness on her small face.

"My mission here is almost complete. When I leave, will you miss me?" Her eyes were full of longing. She was smiling, yet there was a hint of sorrow in it.

A deep sense of reluctance stirred in me. "Of course I will. You still haven't told me when you were born."

Elisa hugged me tightly and, with a soft sniffle, whispered, "You'll know when the time comes."

Half-asleep, I felt a gentle touch on my cheek and heard a barely audible voice.

"Goodbye, Mom."

When I awoke in the morning, Elisa was gone. So last night wasn't a dream—she had really left. The house felt suddenly empty, and a hollow ache filled my heart, as though something essential was missing.

I told myself it was alright, that I'd see her again someday.

Right? Future daughter?

The ringing of my phone interrupted my thoughts. It was an unfamiliar number.

"I have your daughter. If you want her alive, come alone to this location!" Then a text came through with an address.

It was Andrew. I'd blocked and deleted all his contacts after our breakup.

"Don't come, leave me!" Elisa's panicked voice came through on the other end.

"What do you want?! Let her go!"

But wasn't Elisa already gone? How could he have her?

"Hurry, and come alone, or I'll throw her into the water to feed the fish!" With that, he hung up.

I didn't have time to think. I quickly texted Hector and rushed to the location.

"Andrew, what are you trying to do?!"

It was a nearly abandoned reservoir, overgrown with weeds and eerily desolate. Andrew, unshaven and looking unhinged, held Elisa at the water's edge. One wrong move, and they'd fall into the deep waters below.

"What am I doing?" he laughed darkly, his eyes wild with madness. "You and that little brat destroyed everything for me! I'm here to make you pay!"

"Now let her go."

"Alright," Andrew sneered, releasing his grip. He climbed into the driver's seat as I watched helplessly, my heart in my throat, as Elisa fell.

"No!" A wave of agony surged through me, my eyes red with rage.

"Andrew, I'll kill you!" I lunged at him, my hands wrapped around his neck in fury.

"I told you, I'm taking you both with me!" Andrew laughed maniacally, locking the windows and slamming his foot on the gas pedal.

"Caroline, you'll never be free of me!"

Bang—

I opened my eyes, taking in my surroundings—a familiar yet strange place.

"Mom, I'm back," came a cheerful voice from the doorway. A familiar figure bounded into the room, and I instinctively opened my arms.

But Elisa passed right through me and into the embrace of another person.
