Not long after, she became Larry's sworn sister, and Larry had once mentioned that Pamela had saved his life.
But Pamela was cowardly and never visited the war-torn Somalia; in fact, she always looked down on it and belittled it.
I curl my cold fingers, and a ridiculous guess slowly takes shape in my mind.
So that's what happened!
I slump to the ground, crying and laughing at the same time.
A long time later, I wipe away my tears, compose myself, and pick up an unfamiliar phone number.
"I have a ten billion-dollar deal on my hands. Want in?"
"What business?"
"Three days from now, kidnap me."
I gently stroke my stomach. "Larry will pay the ransom willingly."
Just as I hang up, Larry pushes the door open and enters.
He's drunk, stumbling slightly, but still gripping my hand tightly, his vigilance unchanged. "What do you mean I'll pay willingly?"
Without blinking, I reply, "I saw a necklace I like, and they said I need to pay a deposit first."
He laughs and rests his head on my shoulder. "Alright, I'll pay. I'll pay for everything. Pamela, as long as it's something you want, I'll give it to you. I'm yours too."
I expressionlessly help him to bed, cover him with the blanket, and lie beside him, staring at the ceiling through the night.
The next day, on our way to try on wedding dresses, Larry receives a phone call. He hurriedly explains to me, "Wife, a shipment got stuck, and I have to go handle it now."
He holds my hand, his face full of guilt. "I'm sorry, I'll go with you tomorrow to try the wedding dress. I've also booked our life's only pair of wedding rings. Let's go together tomorrow, okay?"
I pull my hand back. "I understand. Go ahead, don't worry. I'll stay home and wait for you."
He squeezes my hand, then leaves as soon as I get out of the car.
Less than ten minutes later, Scott's car arrives.
As soon as I get in, a photo of Pamela is sent to me.
She's wearing the sparkling diamond ring, the wedding dress I had my eye on, and kneeling on a man's lap.
One large hand rests on her pale thigh through the thin fabric of the dress, lips kissing the crescent-shaped birthmark on her right shoulder, eyes filled with desire.
A message follows.
"I can only go on at night when I imagine her as you, Pamela, my good Pamela, I miss you, take care of me, okay?"
"Now, you're filthy inside and out. A bastard child and a wild chicken's mother. Nicole, what's the difference between you and someone from a red-light district? At least they charge a few bucks. You're the one paying to breed a bastard, ha-ha."
"Is one enough? Should I fill you with a whole litter? You're like a sow, ha-ha."
The world around me deafens, the heavy, metallic taste of blood filling my throat. I scream, grabbing a rock from the ground, wishing to end it all with them.
Scott kicks me in the stomach, sending me crashing to the ground, spitting blood, my face pale from the pain.
But at this moment, Pamela suddenly steps back, fear in her eyes. She stumbles backward, falling onto the ground.
Even though she doesn't have a scratch on her, Larry arrives in a flash, stepping over my hand to immediately hold her in his arms, his eyes full of raw worry.
"Pamela, are you okay? Are you hurt anywhere?"
Pamela calls out in pain, looking at me with tears in her eyes, her gaze a mix of grief and longing.
"Nicole, I know I've wronged you. I just wanted to apologize and wish you and Larry well. Why do you hurt me like this? You knew I'm pregnant."
"Even if you hate me, the child is innocent."
She holds Larry's hand, speaking softly, "Larry, this child is…"
She lowers her eyes shyly, hesitant to speak, but the meaning is clear.
