A few minutes later, York and Marcia were in the car.

As soon as the door closed, Marcia said, "My apologies, I seem to have forgotten my purse. Would you mind waiting just a moment, Mr. Ferguson?"

She got out and walked back into the Ferguson living room, just in time to hear her parents berating the Fergusons.

They were complaining that with the engagement so close, it was insulting for York to get so badly injured for his ex-wife. They wanted to know what the Fergusons intended to do about it.

Marcia immediately interjected. "Dad, Mom, this only proves that Mr. Ferguson is a man who values his relationships."

Her words were exactly what Sewell and Old Mr. Ferguson wanted to hear. They chimed in with agreement, showering Marcia with praise.

Marcia then addressed the old man directly. "Grandpa Ferguson, since Mr. Ferguson has other ideas, you shouldn't pressure him. Let him do what he feels he must."

"Are you saying you want to give up on this alliance?" Old Mr. Ferguson asked.

Marcia smiled. " I have always admired Mr. Ferguson's sharp instincts and methods in the business world. If this marriage alliance were to happen, it would be a fantastic development for both the Ferguson and Windsor families."

"However," she continued, "as the old saying goes, pushing too hard can have the opposite effect. The result I want to see is our families working together in harmony, growing closer. Perhaps you could ease the tension within your own family first. Stop trying to block Mr. Ferguson. Otherwise, it will backfire, and that won't benefit anyone."

Seeing Old Mr. Ferguson and Sewell nodding in agreement, Marcia turned to Sewell. "President Ferguson, you should focus on mending the relationship between father and son. Leave the rest to me."

With that, she retrieved her purse, mentioned that York was waiting for her in the car, and gracefully departed.

Behind her, Old Mr. Ferguson and Sewell couldn't stop singing her praises, their eyes filled with approval.

Wendy sat silently beside Sewell, not saying a word. This Marcia was far more rational and clever than she had anticipated. For a purely strategic business marriage, she was the perfect candidate. But her son was stubborn and drowning in regret, his heart completely set on Claudia. This alliance was most likely doomed.

Back in the car, Marcia got in. York glanced at her once, then leaned back against the headrest and closed his eyes.

"Thank you," York said, nodding.

The tension in the car eased.

"You know what they say, if your own house is a mess, nothing else goes smoothly," Marcia said, her tone now casual. "If you want to remarry your ex-wife, you can take your time. But causing a rift with your closest relatives is hardly a wise move."

The comment reminded York of the scene his grandfather and father had caused at the Watkins' home, and his expression shut down, going hard and unreadable.

Marcia noticed the shift in his mood and wisely said no more.

They drove the rest of the way to the hospital in silence. Marcia escorted York to the elevators.

The doors slid open. Just as Marcia was about to help York inside, Claudia and her assistant, Mira, walked out.
