In a deserted corner of the ballroom, Claudia studied the woman before her. There was something familiar about Mrs. Quinn’s eyes and brow, but Claudia just couldn’t place her.

Her gaze dropped to Mrs. Quinn’s gently rounded belly, and she instinctively took a cautious step back.

“Let’s not beat around the bush,” Claudia said. “I don’t like playing games.”

Mrs. Quinn placed one hand on her hip and the other on her stomach in a classic maternal pose. “Don’t you think I look a lot like Ann?”

Ann?

Claudia’s eyes tightened. “You’re Ann’s…?”

Mrs. Quinn’s smile slowly vanished. She stepped closer, leaned in, and whispered, “I’m Ann’s aunt, Shelly.”

After dropping the bomb, Shelly straightened up, observing Claudia’s reaction. Claudia was stunned for a moment, and then everything clicked into place. No wonder Ann’s brother and sister-in-law were at the Quinn family dinner. The new Mrs. Quinn was Ann’s aunt.

The two women stared at each other in silence until the Quinn patriarch walked over. “What are you two ladies chatting about?”

Shelly smiled. “Mrs. Lennox introduced me to a remarkable doctor.”

The patriarch recognized Claudia. “Ah, Dr. Watkins.” He gave her a polite nod before carefully helping Shelly to a seat to rest.

Claudia watched with a blank expression as the man doted on his wife. It was clear Shelly was a treasured addition to the Quinn family.

“Scared now?”

Gideon’s keen eyes noticed her troubled expression. “Did you run into some trouble?”

Claudia just shook her head. Reassured, Gideon said, “Come on, there’s a senior colleague I’d like you to meet.”

Half an hour later, as Claudia and Gideon were leaving a side hall, they ran right into York and Peter. They all exchanged greetings, except for York, whose deep-set eyes remained locked on Claudia, not saying a word.

Ignoring his intense gaze, Claudia said, “Gideon, Peter, you two go ahead and chat. I’m just going to the restroom.”

She walked off alone toward the staircase. From a distance, Ann’s relatives and Celia exchanged a look and immediately followed her to the second floor.

Claudia lingered in the restroom, her thoughts swirling. She had thought divorcing York would finally bring her the peaceful life she wanted. But with the Ferguson-Windsor marriage pending, both families saw her as a stumbling block.
