York pushed Peter away. "Leave me alone."

Why? Why would Hugh give Claudia a thirty-million-dollar evening gown? Claudia always maintained strong boundaries and never accepted gifts from people casually. She had once said she only liked gifts from him.

Peter saw York's unsteady, faltering steps and quickly followed him downstairs.

York reached for Claudia's car door, but Gideon stepped in to block him.

As a doctor, Gideon could tell something was wrong with York. "Mr. Ferguson, stress goes straight to your stomach. You were just rushed to the hospital this morning for gastric bleeding. For your own health, you need to control your emotions."

York's chest heaved violently. He was trying desperately to restrain himself, but his voice was still unsteady. "Gideon, this is between my wife and me. I hope you'll stay out of it."

Claudia hesitated for a moment, then said to Gideon and Peter, "Gideon, Peter, you two can go ahead. I happen to have something I want to ask Mr. Ferguson as well."

Gideon knew Claudia didn't want to trouble him. Since she had said so, he didn't insist. After all, York was the one seeking reconciliation; he wouldn't harm her.

Gideon and Peter got into their cars and drove off.

On the side of the empty, late-night road, only York and Claudia remained.

Claudia stared at him coldly. "Mr. Ferguson, whatever you have to say, you can say it now."

Her coldness cut York to the quick. His eyes rimmed with red, he stepped forward and gripped her shoulders. Staring into her eyes, he demanded in a low voice, "Why would Hugh give you such an expensive gown?"
