York held Claudia without moving or retorting, simply letting her vent her fury.

Only when she was exhausted and fell silent did he gently brush a stray lock of hair from her forehead.

“Claudia, you don’t have to be so vicious,” he said softly. “I just want to remarry you, to get a chance to make it up to you. I’m not as horrible as you make me out to be.”

She pushed his hand away. “York, I’m asking you, why are you so insistent on remarrying me?”

His gaze was utterly sincere. “Marriage is a vow for life. We promised to be together forever.”

Her eyes filled with contempt. “I’m sure you said the same thing to Ann James and her son, didn’t you?”

York shook his head. “I made Ann a promise, but it’s not what you think.”

He tried to explain, “How I feel about you and how I feel about Ann are different. I don’t love Ann. I have no desire for her.”

Before he could finish, Claudia cut him off with a cold question. “York, do you love me?”

The question stunned him into silence.

For as long as he could remember, Claudia had been a constant in his life. They had grown up together, and for more than twenty years, she had practically shouted her love for him from the rooftops.

But she had never asked him this.

In their three years of marriage, she had given endlessly without ever raising the subject.

This was the first time she had ever asked if he loved her.

And in all these years, he had never once considered the question.

Claudia watched his reaction with a cold, mocking smile.

“York, you’re a businessman who puts profit above all else,” she said. “The truth is, you don’t love anyone. You only care about your own needs.”

“York,” she said, her voice firm, “no matter who I end up with in this life, I will absolutely never go back to you.”

He glared at her and asked, “Claudia, I’m asking you one more time. Cut things off with Hugh—”

“Impossible!”

She refused before he could even finish the sentence.

They stared at each other, and the unwavering resolve in her eyes made him snap. His eyes blazing, he enunciated each word with venom. “Claudia, you’re forcing my hand.”

With that, he started the car. With one hand holding her captive in his arms and the other on the steering wheel, he slammed his foot on the gas. The car shot forward like an arrow, merging into the fast lane.
