York’s expression turned cold. “If it’s not what I think it is, then what is it?”
They locked eyes.
Claudia paused for a moment before saying, “Since we were kids, I’ve clung to you, followed you, and depended on you because I saw you as a brother. When I said I liked you and wanted to marry you, that was all just talk. I didn't even know what love was.”
Her voice grew firm. “When the Watkins family went bankrupt, so many people kicked us when we were down. I just saw you as our family’s last hope. A lifeline, you understand?”
“I don’t believe you!” York cried out, cutting her off before she could finish.
Claudia forcefully broke free from his grasp.
She took a step back onto the curb. “I confused family affection with romantic love. I really thought of you as my own brother, I swear!”
Before the words had even faded, York reached out, cupped the back of her neck, and pulled her into a kiss.
His kiss was rushed and hungry, as if he was desperate to prove something.
The more Claudia struggled, the deeper he kissed her.
Before she knew it, he had her pinned against a tree on the sidewalk. He didn't stop until she was too weak to struggle any longer.
Leaning against the tree trunk, Claudia’s breathing was ragged, her eyes red.
She looked up and met York’s crimson eyes, tormented by desire. She raised her hand and slapped him across the face.
A sharp “smack!” echoed in the air, and both of them froze for a second.
Claudia watched York’s reaction closely as she lowered her slightly stinging hand.
In that instant, a cold calm washed over her.
The York in front of her had no memory of their past life. He didn’t remember what he had done to her.
He was cold-blooded and fickle, his mood turning faster than a flipped page. No one had ever dared to provoke him like this.
