Old Mr. Ferguson scoffed, "That's not for you to decide!"

York's expression darkened. "Grandfather, I'm your grandson. Are you really going to tie me to some random woman for the rest of my life? Does my happiness mean so little to you?"

Sewell pointed a finger at York, scolding him. "Aren't we doing all of this for your own good?"

Sewell continued, "Just think about how much money you've already sunk into the Watkins family. You're a businessman, not a charity!"

York remained firm. "Even with immense power and a fortune that could rival a nation's, none of it can buy genuine affection, a happy marriage, or a harmonious family!"

Old Mr. Ferguson's face turned ashen with anger.

He stood up, trembling, and pointed at York. "Have I taught you nothing all these years? Are you trying to kill me with anger?!"

York tried to reason with him as patiently as he could. "Grandfather, power and wealth are important, but you can't sacrifice your own feelings and marriage for material things."

But Old Mr. Ferguson was unbelievably stubborn. "Everything you have was given to you by the Ferguson family, so you will listen to us. There are ten days until the wedding. You will either marry Claudia as planned, or you will get engaged to Miss Windsor. The choice is yours!"

Seeing the patriarch's fury, York softened his tone. "I understand, Grandfather. Please, get some rest."

Without waiting for another word, York strode out of the living room.

At the doorway, he paused and looked back. He saw his grandfather lying on the sofa, gasping for breath from anger. He saw his father, fuming, berating the servants. And he saw his mother, sighing helplessly off to the side. York lowered his gaze, hiding the emotion in his eyes.
