After hanging up, Eleanor told the man driving, "The meeting's been pushed back an hour."
Ian's deep eyes met hers in the rearview mirror. "Then you can get some sleep."
"Okay, I'll rest for a bit." Eleanor lowered the center armrest, found a comfortable position, and leaned against it. The medicine quickly pulled her into a deep sleep.
While waiting at a red light, Ian glanced back at her and adjusted the car's temperature to a more comfortable level.
He drove steadily for about fifteen minutes, finally parking at a quiet lakeside park, far from the city's hustle and bustle.
Ian got out of the car and gently draped his suit jacket over Eleanor. Without waking her, he returned to the driver's seat and quietly handled work on his phone.
Time passed quickly. Forty minutes later, Ian was driving toward the lab.
To his surprise, Eleanor had set an alarm before she fell asleep. Just as he parked in the lab's lot, the alarm went off, startling her awake. She was still groggy, but she noticed the jacket draped over her.
She paused for a moment, but instead of the usual rejection, she simply took the jacket off, placed it aside, and rubbed her temples. "Let's go."
Ian saw her reaction to his jacket, and the corners of his lips curved up almost imperceptibly.
In the past, she would have tossed it aside with disdain.
"Feeling better?" Ian asked with concern as they got out of the car.
"Much better," Eleanor nodded. Her voice was still a little nasal, but she was clearly more alert.
"Thank you," Eleanor said, looking up at him.
Ian's heart clenched. He glanced at his watch, then at Eleanor's face, which had an unnatural flush but was still trying to hold on. He suddenly interrupted Ryan, who was giving the summary. "Ryan, you can take it from here. Eleanor's fever is back. I'm taking her to rest."
With that, he stood up, walked over to Eleanor, leaned down, and placed a hand on her forehead. She was still burning up.
"Your fever's back," Ian said, his voice low but firm, leaving no room for argument. "We're going to the hospital now."
Principal Maxwell immediately looked over with concern. "Ian, don't delay. Take Eleanor to get checked out."
"Eleanor, your health comes first. Go see a doctor," Ryan added worriedly.
Faced with everyone's concern, Eleanor finally relented. She nodded. "Okay."
Seeing her agree, Ian's brow relaxed slightly. As Eleanor reached for her laptop bag, he quickly closed the computer, packed it for her, and asked, "Can you walk?"
