Eleanor let out an exasperated laugh and pushed him away. "Alright, enough messing around."

As she stepped out of the car, Ian naturally hovered his hand over the doorframe to protect her head from bumping.

Eleanor headed straight for the lab lobby. She had originally pinned her hair up in a low bun, but now she had no choice but to let her thick, dark hair fall loose over her shoulders in a desperate bid to hide her man's mischievous handiwork.

The elevator doors chimed open, and she pressed the button for the fifth floor.

Her reflection stared back at her from the mirrored walls. With her hair cascading down her back, a languid softness around her eyes, and a flushed, radiant complexion, it was painfully obvious that she was a woman thoroughly loved.

Eleanor looked away just as the elevator arrived at the fifth floor.

The doors parted. The moment she stepped into her office, she spotted a familiar figure standing by the floor-to-ceiling window.

Xavier.

He looked a little thinner than the last time they had met. Dressed in a dark grey trench coat, he still possessed that tall, gentlemanly stature and a gentle warmth.

"Eleanor," he greeted her smoothly.

"Xavier, I'm so sorry to keep you waiting," Eleanor said as she walked over. Just then, Gwenda brought in two cups of tea.

"I hope dropping by unannounced isn't interrupting your work."

"Not at all. Let's sit and talk." She slid a cup of tea toward him. "How has your mother been doing?"

Xavier gripped his cup, plunging into a few seconds of heavy silence. "Not well. The current treatment plan isn't yielding the results we hoped for."

Eleanor's heart sank. Xavier looked up at her, his expression tight. "If your research makes it to the clinical trial phase, I'd like to enroll my mother."

Eleanor nodded solemnly and briefed him on her recent breakthroughs. Since she was building upon the highly advanced Neural Interface Project, her research in this specific field had a significant advantage.

Listening to her outline the plan, a spark of hope ignited in Xavier's eyes. "Eleanor, if there's anything you need from me, just say the word. I'll do whatever it takes to help you."

"Everything is running smoothly right now, so we're good for the time being," Eleanor assured him. "But I'll give it everything I have."
